It is safe to say that its perennial root is the always-existing fact of ignorance and sensuality, and prevalent misconceptions of the character of God as the legitimate consequence. Plato, reasoning against the atheism of his time, developed the fact that the then current atheism was rather a revolt against the gods, or vain superstitions of the age. The atheism of the renaissance, which threatened for a time to eradicate all religion from the world, was at first a mere protest against abuses of the idea of God intolerable to awakened reason.
