Sindicatos têm em sua essência o propósito de representar determinadas categorias para a consecução organizada dos seus objetivos. Entidades ligadas às empresas naturalmente defendem os donos dos meios de produção, enquanto entidades ligadas aos trabalhadores têm por natureza a defesa dos interesses dos trabalhadores. Não se exige maior esforço argumentativo para conduzir a compreensão quanto aos fins das entidades sindicais, isso porque tais fins estão intimamente ligados à secular polarização entre capital e trabalho. Ocorre que, no Brasil, as lutas que permitiram a organização sindical ser elevada ao patamar de direito social com status constitucional não foram suficientes para garantir necessária representatividade dos trabalhadores. Se no plano da legalidade houve inegável avanço desde as lutas sindicais dos séculos XIX e XX, não se pode afirmar o mesmo quando o tema é enfrentando pelo prisma da legitimidade e da plena representatividade dos trabalhadores. Não há qualquer risco em afirmar que das mais de dezessete mil entidades sindicais existentes no Brasil, um número muito reduzido exerce verdadeiro protagonismo no debate sério sobre a defesa dos direitos dos trabalhadores, sobretudo em face do fenômeno da precarização, sendo certo que grande parte das entidades sindicais sofrem com ausência de democracia interna da qual decorreria a saudável alternância de poder com a possibilidade do arejamento do debate com as bases, com os setores empresariais e com a sociedade.

This book intends to be an alert to the fact that the curve measuring environmental costs against the economic benefits of capitalism has irreversibly entered into a negative phase. The prospect of an environmental collapse has been evidenced by the sciences and the humanities since the 1960s. Today, it imposes its urgency. This collapse differs from past civilizations in that it is neither local nor just civilizational. In the first part it presents a comprehensive review of scientific data to show the already visible effects of each of the different environmental crises and its consequences to human life on Earth. In the second part, Luiz Marques critically discusses what he calls the three concentric illusions that prevent us from realizing the gravity of the current socio-environmental crises: the illusion of a sustainable capitalism, the illusion that economic growth is still capable of providing more well-being and the anthropocentric illusion. Finally, Marques argues that "fitting" back into the biosphere will only be possible if we dismantle the expansive socioeconomic gear that has shaped our societies since the 16th century by moving from a Social Contract to a Natural Contract, which takes into account the whole biosphere. Challenging prevailing theories of development and labor, Gay Seidman's controversial study explores how highly politicized labor movements could arise simultaneously in Brazil and South Africa, two starkly different societies. Beginning with the 1960s, Seidman shows how both authoritarian states promoted specific rapid-industrialization strategies, in the process reshaping the working class and altering relationships between business and the state. When economic growth slowed in the 1970s, workers in these countries challenged social and political repression; by the mid-1980s, they had become major voices in the transition from authoritarian rule. Based in factories and working-class communities, these movements enjoyed broad support as they fought for improved social services, land reform, expanding electoral participation, and racial integration. In Brazil, Seidman takes us from the shopfloor, where disenfranchized workers organized for better wages and working conditions, to the strikes and protests that spread to local communities. Similar demands for radical change emerged in South Africa, where community groups in black townships joined organized labor in a challenge to minority rule that linked class consciousness to racial oppression. Seidman details the complex dynamics of these militant movements and develops a broad analysis of how newly industrializing countries shape the opportunities for labor to express demands.
