Atlas of Modernity' is an exhibition that allows to see the collection of Muzeum Sztuki in Lodz, Poland, in a different way, but, more importantly, it is also a story of modernity and its meaning from a contemporary perspective constructed with the works included in the exhibition. The exhibition does not report the history of modernity put in chronological order, neither does it present the history of modern art. It focuses on the most important phenomena that are commonly connected with that which is modern, such as: emancipation, autonomy, industrialisation, capital, urbanisation, experiment, mechanization and revolution. By creating a 'collage' of artworks from different periods, representing different aesthetics and artistic attitudes around these notions the exhibition poses questions about how the character of the phenomena changed, how the way they were perceived altered and, most importantly, to what extent they shape contemporary reality. Exhibition: Muzeum Sztuki Lódz, Poland (since 24.01.2014).

"The Atlas of modernity" is a story told through works from the collection of the Muzeum Sztuki in Łódź. Modernity is understood here as a set of ideas, tensions, and energies directly or indirectly influencing social reality up to this day. In the publication the story takes the form of a visual and textual collage. Its point of departure is an exhibition that opened at the Muzeum Sztuki in Łódź in the beginning of 2014, prepared under the direction of Jarosław Suchan by a curatorial team consisting of Aleksandra Jach, Paulina Kurc-Maj, Maria Morzuch, Anna Saciuk-Gąsowska, Joanna Sokołowska, Katarzyna Słoboda, and Magdalena Ziółowska. Neither the exhibition nor this book intend to lay out the history of modernism or the history of modernist art. Instead of providing a chronological and orderly narrative, we offer a montage of ideas about modernity and traces of modernity visible in 20th- and 21st-century art. The category of the "atlas" points to the construction of the exhibition and the book - they are both a collection of "maps", each of which describes a topography of a different "territory" of modernity. Not all territories have been described here. However, the incomplete character of this collection and its collage method of organization seem to best reflect the modern experience of reality, its inevitable fragmentary and discontinuous character.

Mapping Beyond Measure written by Simon Ferdinand and has been published by U of Nebraska Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-12-01 with Social Science categories.

Over the last century a growing number of visual artists have been captivated by the entwinements of beauty and power, truth and artifice, and the fantasy and functionality they perceive in geographical mapmaking. This field of "map art" has moved into increasing prominence in recent years yet critical writing on the topic has been largely confined to general overviews of the field. In Mapping Beyond Measure Simon Ferdinand analyzes diverse map-based works of painting, collage, film, walking performance, and digital drawing made in Britain, Japan, the Netherlands, Ukraine, the United States, and the former Soviet Union, arguing that together they challenge the dominant modern view of the world as a measurable and malleable geometrical space. This challenge has strong political ramifications, for it is on the basis of modernity's geometrical worldview that states have legislated over social space; that capital has coordinated global markets and exploited distant environments; and that powerful cartographic institutions have claimed exclusive authority in mapmaking. Mapping Beyond Measure breaks fresh ground in undertaking a series of close readings of significant map artworks in sustained dialogue with spatial theorists, including Peter Sloterdijk, Zygmunt Bauman, and Michel de Certeau. In so doing Ferdinand reveals how map art calls into question some of the central myths and narratives of rupture through which modern space has traditionally been imagined and establishes map art's distinct value amid broader contemporary shifts toward digital mapping.

Thesis (M.A.) from the year 2008 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 1,0, University of Frankfurt (Main) (Institut für England- und Amerikastudien), language: English, abstract: The title of this study is “Postmodernist Intertextuality in David Mitchell’s Cloud Atlas” and is based on the following hypotheses: 1. There is a particular kind of intertextuality specific to postmodernist literature that differs from previous uses of intertextual references. 2. Postmodernist intertextuality is deconstructive, self-reflexive and critical of Western hegemonic discourses and metanarratives. 3. This specific kind of intertextuality is a key element of postmodernist art. The first part of this work is going to outline some of the social and historical developments that have been associated with the postmodern condition and the rise of new art forms which respond to these changes. Lyotard’s description of postmodernity as an age that is marked by its profound “incredulity toward metanarratives” (The Postmodern Condition: A Report on Knowledge xxiv) is of particular significance to this study, especially his critique of the so-called “Enlightenment narrative” (xxiii) with its humanist values. This definition helps understand the interaction between postmodern theory and postmodernist art which are both directed against the same universalist assumptions. In the second part of this study, the concept of postmodernist intertextuality is applied to David Mitchell's novel Cloud Atlas.

The last fifty years have witnessed the growing pervasiveness of the figure of the map in critical, theoretical, and fictional discourse. References to mapping and cartography are endemic in poststructuralist theory, and, similarly, geographically and culturally diverse authors of twentieth-century fiction seem fixated upon mapping. While the map metaphor has been employed for centuries to highlight issues of textual representation and epistemology, the map metaphor itself has undergone a transformation in the postmodern era. This metamorphosis draws together poststructuralist conceptualizations of epistemology, textuality, cartography, and metaphor, and signals a shift away from modernist preoccupations with temporality and objectivity to a postmodern pragmatics of spatiality and subjectivity. Cartographic Strategies of Postmodernity charts this metamorphosis of cartographic metaphor, and argues that the ongoing reworking of the map metaphor renders it a formative and performative metaphor of postmodernity.

The 1914-2024 War Atlas deconstructs the contemporary widespread and well-known image of the 20th and 21st century, arguing for the continuity of the historical process covering the period 1914-2024. The years between 1914 and 2024 constitute a period of unparalleled economic growth, scientific advancement, political development, and social change - in just over 100 years, human civilization has moved from an industrial to a digital age. However, they also cover some of the most dangerous, violent, and politically volatile years in human history. In these years, two world wars have been fought, weapons of mass destruction dropped, authoritarian and democratic regimes alike have risen and fallen, and regional conflicts have been almost continuous, effectively conjoining World War I, World War II, the Cold War and the Russo-Ukrainian war. This volume indicates that the 1914 July Crisis, which set in motion a sequence of events that spanned over 100 years. Containing a range of colourful maps and charts, this book graphically illustrates the arguments presented in both an informative and visual way. This atlas will serve as a perfect textbook for students studying history, geography, politics and international relations, as well as being a useful guide to contemporary world politics for researchers, and for those interesting in the international relations and modern history.

In this timely collection, an international team of Renaissance scholars analyzes the material practice behind the concept of mapping, a particular cognitive mode of gaining control over the world. Ranging widely across visual and textual artifacts implicated in the culture of mapping, from the literature of Shakespeare, Spenser, Marlowe and Jonson, to representations of body, city, nation and empire, Literature, Mapping, and the Politics of Space in Early Modern Britian argues for a thorough reevaluation of the impact of cartography on the shaping of social and political identities in early modern Britain.

It is evident that modernity is a popular mountain for analysis and reflection of a largely controversial nature. Numerous theories have also been written about the beginning as well as the end of modernity. The aim of Modernologies is to achieve an account of the state of artistic research and to discuss selected contributions to the subject matter that appears central after two to three decades of an ever intensely blazing conflict over the legacy of modernity and modernism.
