A lake, as a body of water, is in continuous interaction with the rocks and soils in its drainage basin, the atmosphere, and surface and groundwaters. Human industrial and agricultural activities introduce new inputs and processes into lake systems. This volume is a selection of ten contributions dealing with diverse aspects of lake systems, including such subjects as the geological controls of lake basins and their histories, mixing and circulation patterns in lakes, gaseous exchange between the water and atmosphere, and human input to lakes through atmospheric precipitation and surficial runoff. This work was written with a dual goal in mind: to serve as a textbook and to provide professionals with in-depth expositions and discussions of the more important aspects of lake systems.

Rapidly increasing interest in the problems of air pollution and source-receptor relationships has led to a significant expansion of knowledge in the field of atmospheric chemistry. In general the chemistry of atmospheric trace constituents is governed by the oxygen content of the atmosphere. Upon entering the atmosphere in a more or less reduced state, trace substances are oxidized via various pathways and the generated products are often precursors of acidic compounds. Beside oxidation processes occurring in the gas phase, gaseous compounds are often converted into solid aerosol particles. The various steps within gas-to-particle conversion are constantly interacting with condensation processes, which are caused by the tropospheric water content. Thus in addition to the gaseous state, a liquid and solid state exists within the troposphere. The solid phase consists of atmospheric conversion products or fly ash and mineral dust. The liquid phase consists of water, conversion products and soluble compounds. The chemistry occurring within this system is often referred to as hydrogeneous chemistry. The chemist interprets this term, however, more strictly as reactions which occur only at an interphase between phases. This, however, is not always what happens in the atmosphere. There are indeed heterogeneous processes such as reactions occurring on the surface of dry aerosol particles. But apart from these, we must focus as well on reactions in the homogeneous phase, which are single steps of consecutive reactions running through various phases.

Soil and Environmental Chemistry emphasizes the problem-solving skills students will need when they enter their chosen field. This revised reprint links valuable soil chemical concepts to the "big picture" by discussing how other soil and environmental factors affect soil chemistry. This broader environmental approach makes the text relevant to today’s soil science curriculums. This book uses computer modeling for water and soil chemistry, providing students with the models used by practicing environmental chemists. It includes examples and complex problems with worked solutions, as well as examples based on real data that expose students to the real problems and data they will face in their careers. It also provides edits to formulas, numbers, and text. This text will serve as a useful resource for upper-level undergraduate students studying soil chemistry without an extensive background in calculus and only limited background in physical chemistry, such as soil science majors and environmental science majors. Use of computer modeling for water and soil chemistry provides students with the models used by practicing environmental chemists Examples and complex problems with worked solutions included throughout the text Examples based on real data provide exposure to the real problems and data students will face in their careers

Environmental Chemistry provides an introduction to fundamental concepts in environmental chemistry. The book emerged from a short lecture and practical course given to first year students in the School of Environmental Sciences, University of East Anglia. It adopts the earth-air-water factory as an analogue to illustrate the way in which chemical principles operate in the environment. The book traces the hydrological cycle and the chemical processes which occur as water, with its dissolved and particulate load, moves from the atmosphere onto the land surface, into rivers, lakes, and oceans and is eventually incorporated into marine sediment. A glossary of terms is provided for readers who do not have an extensive background in chemistry. Although aimed at first year students studying environmental sciences, chemistry, geology, biology, or other science subjects, this book should also appeal to sixth formers studying chemistry or other sciences to ""A"" level, as well as to anyone with (or willing to acquire) a basic knowledge of chemistry and interested in how the natural environment operates as a chemical system.
