This volume contains the lectures and communications presented at the NATO Advanced Research Workshop on "Atomic and Molecular Processes with Short Intense Laser Pulses" (NATO ARW 848/86). The workshop was held at Bishop's University, Lennoxville, Que, Canada, July 19-24, 1987, under the directorship of Prof. A.D. Bandrauk, Universite de Sherbrooke. A scientific committee made up of Dr. P. Corkum (Laser Physics, ~ational Research Council of Canada), Dr. P. Hackett (Laser Chemistry, National Research Council of Canada), Prof. S.C. Wallace (Dept. of Chemistry and Physics, University of Toronto), and Prof. F.H.M. Faisal (FakultHt fUr Physik, UniversitHt Bellefeld) was called upon to invite and organize eminent lectures in the fields of i) Coherence Phenomena in Atomic and Molecular Photoprocesses. ii) High Intensity Atomic and Molecular Phenomena. iii) Laser Chemistry The aim of the workshop was to bring together chemists and physicists in order to~iscuss and analyze the progress made in the use of short in tense laser pulses in understanding coherence phenomena and high intensity, nonlin~adiative effects in atomic and molecular systems.

This volume contains the lectures and communications presented at the NATO Advanced Research Workshop (NATO ARW 900857) which was held May 5-10, 1991 at McMaster University, Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. A scientific commitee made up of P.P. Lambropoulos (USC & Crete), P.8. Corkum (NRC, Ottawa), and H. B. vL. van den Heuvell (FOM, Amsterdam) guided the organizers, A.D. Bandrauk (Sherbrooke) and S.C. Wallace (Toronto) in preparing a programme which would cover the latest advances in the field of atom and molecule laser interactions. Since the last meeting held in July 1987 on "Atomic and Molecular Processes with Short Intense Laser Pulses", NATO ASI vol 1718 (Plenum Press 1988), considerable progress has been made in understanding high intensity effects on atoms and the concomitant coherence effects. After four years, the emphasis is now shifting more to molecules. The present volume represents therefore this trend with four sections covering the main interests of research endeavours in this area: i) Atoms in Intense Laser-Fields ii) Molecules in Intense Laser Fields iii) Atomic Coherences iv) Molecular Coherences The experience developed over the years in multiphoton atomic processes has been very useful and is the main source of our understanding of similar processes in molecules. Thus ATI (above threshold ionization) has been found to occur in molecules as well as a new phenomenon, ATD (above-threshold dissociation). Laser-induced avoided crossings of molecular electronic surfaces is also now entering the current language of high intensity molecular processes.

Volume XXXII contains a number of review articles on recent developments in optics and related subjects. The first article presents an account of guided wave optics on silicon which is a subject of considerable current interest in the broad field of integrated optics, likely to influence the design and fabrication of various optical components. Chapter two provides an overview of the optical implementation of neural networks and discusses their design, models and architecture. The following article deals with applications of the path integral technique to the theory of wave propagation in random media, a technique used with considerable success in the last two decades for solutions of problems encountered in classical statistical wave theory. Methods for obtaining information on the relative location of objects in space are considered in the following chapter and includes an analysis of the potential accuracy and reliability of object location in the presence of additive Gaussian noise and a discussion of optical filters for localization of objects under various circumstances. The fifth article deals with the broad topic of radiation from uniformly moving sources. It considers the Vavilov-Cerenkov radiation, the Doppler effect in media, transition radiation and bremsstralung. These phenomena are of particular importance in the electrodynamics of continuous media, especially in a plasma. In the concluding article nonlinear optical plasmas in atoms and weakly relativistic plasmas are considered. The emphasis is on the specific properties of laser radiation that are important for inducing multiphoton processes and on nonlinear interactions of very intense laser pulses with electrons. All the articles are written by leading authorities in their respective fields, from all over the world.

The PUILS series delivers up-to-date reviews of progress in Ultrafast Intense Laser Science, a newly emerging interdisciplinary research field spanning atomic and molecular physics, molecular science, and optical science, which has been stimulated by the recent developments in ultrafast laser technologies. Each volume compiles peer-reviewed chapters authored by researchers at the forefront of each their own subfields of UILS. Every chapter begins with an overview of the topics to be discussed, so that researchers unfamiliar to the subfield, as well as graduate students, can grasp the importance and attractions of the research topic at hand; these are followed by reports of cutting-edge discoveries. This seventh volume covers a broad range of topics from this interdisciplinary research field, focusing on the ionization of atoms and molecules, ultrafast responses of protons and electrons within a molecule, molecular alignment, high-order harmonics and attosecond pulse generation, and acceleration of electrons and ions in laser plasmas.
