Atonement And Ethics In 1 John written by Christopher Armitage and has been published by Bloomsbury Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-06-17 with Religion categories.

Christopher Armitage considers previous theological perception of 1 John as a text advocating that God abhors violence, contrasted with biblical scholarship analysis that focuses upon the text's birth from hostile theological conflict between 'insiders' and 'outsiders', with immensely hostile rhetoric directed towards 'antichrists' and those who have left the community. Armitage argues that a peace-oriented reading of 1 John is still viable, but questions if the commandment that the community loves each other is intended to include their opponents, and whether the text can be of hermeneutic use to advocate non-violence and love of one's neighbour. This book examines five key words from 1 John, hilasmos, sfazo, anthropoktonos, agape and adelphos, looking at their background and use in the Old Testament in both Hebrew and the LXX, arguing that these central themes presuppose a God whose engagement with the world is not assuaging divine anger, nor ferocious defence of truth at the expense of love, but rather peace and avoidance of hatred that inevitably leads to violence and death. Armitage concludes that a peacemaking hermeneutic is not only viable, but integral to reading the epistle.

First published in 1906, this book considers the concept of atonement and suggest that the doctrine of atonement is not an artificial theorem or an inexplicable or unethical dogma, but that it has roots in the foundations of all human life. Lofthouse further argues that the doctrine of atonement is the highest expression of the law of all moral and social progress; and that ethics in itself is of little use as a practical science, unless completed by atonement.

Ethics And Christology In John S Gospel written by Huten Donhring Anal and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020 with Bible categories.

"In the face of the present reality where there is a disparity between once claim of faith and conduct of life, the book analyzes and describes the inalienable relationship between ethics and Christology. Jesus is understood as the actual and perfect manifestation of the moral likeness of God, the Father. Every ethical imploration is directed and revolved around the person, role, authority and mission of Jesus. The book propounds that the thrust of the ethical injunction in John's Gospel is to escort people to believe in Jesus, who is introduced as the logos incarnated in the person of Jesus (Jn. 1:14) for a reason to make the world and its inhabitants to understand and accept him as the Christ, the Son of God and the Son of Man who grants life eternal, the highest and ultimate goal according to the Gospel of John (3:16; 20:31). A response to the call to believe in Jesus results in living in the light, doing good, aligning one's purpose of life in the will of God. Discipleship is considered as the immediate moral context. Ethics in John's Gospel is the ethics of faith and love combined which results from believing and keeping the commandments of Jesus and resulting to "doing the works of God." Johannine ethics stems from the moral world of God, revealed in and through the life and ministry of Jesus, received by faith by community of believers and in the physical absence of Jesus the Spirit-Paraclete takes over to guide and enable the community of believers in all the truth to live its faith in action."

Answers to critical questions regarding the study of the Jesus of history and the Christ of faith The conclusions of the quest for the historical Jesus, which casts the majority of Christ's life as a myth, are a stark contrast to the orthodox view of Christ as presented in the Bible. Pate demonstrates that a critical analysis of the gospel text along with historical and cultural methods of investigation actually point toward an orthodox view of Christ. This work argues that the canonical Gospels are the most trustworthy information we have about the gospel writers as well as the life and ministry of Jesus, including his death, visit to hades, resurrection, and ascension. Readers will be encouraged by the reliability of the Gospel writers, the reality of Jesus' humanity and deity, and the inferiority of the apocryphal gospels.
