The disunity of the church is a social and theological scandal for it betrays the prayer of Jesus that we 'will be one . . . so that the world will believe' (John 17:21). As a Baptist whose academic background focused on the Orthodox Church and whose teaching has included Catholic and Protestant contexts, this division is for Elizabeth Newman personal and professional. Attending to the Wounds on Christ's Body rests on the conviction that the broad tradition of Christianity already contains resources to heal the church, namely the saints of the church. Newman examines especially how Teresa of Avila (1515-1582) speaks to the whole church today in the midst of political, economic, and ecclesial brokenness. Teresa's reliance upon three scriptural figures -- dwellings, marriage, and pilgrimage-- helps make sense of an ecclesial way of life that is inherently unitive, a unity that stands in contrast to that of the nation-state or the global market. Teresa's scriptural journey offers an alternative at once liturgical, political, and economic. This Doctor of the Church provides

""Elizabeth Newman is one of our best spiritual writers and she works at the intersection of theology, spirituality, and Christian behavior. She attends all of these matters in this new book on St. Teresa of Avila, helping us move past the false images of Teresa to reclaim a vision for ecclesial renewal at the heart of her concern."" --Timothy George, Founding Dean, Beeson Divinity School of Samford University ""This is a wonderfully informative book about Teresa of Avila, but it is also much more. Newman reflects on Teresa's central images, dwellings, marriage, and pilgrimage to challenge modern Christians to reconsider their understandings of such things as time, abundance, place, politics, and economics. Such work helps us better inhabit a divided church, to repent of wounding her, and to imagine and pray for her healing. It is hard to conceive of more important theological work."" --Stephen Fowl, Chair of the Department of Theology, Loyola College Elizabeth Newman is Professor of Theology and Ethics at the Baptist Theological Seminary at Richmond. In every church--in every pew, it sometimes seems--there is someone who has been deeply hurt in the Catholic Church. And yet these people find themselves coming to church, wondering if anybody else can understand their experiences, their questions, and their needs. This book brings together twelve authors who describe the pain they've experienced in Catholic institutions--and the pathways they've found to healing and renewed faith. In poetry, memoir, pastoral guidance, and practical advice, these authors explore issues ranging from racism to sexual abuse to gossip and judgment. They share the prayers and practices which have helped them come to know the God Who is Love. They offer support and encouragement to all those for whom the church has been a place of harm as well as holiness.

Wounds From The Cross written by Mark E Crutcher and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-02-12 with categories.

On the cross of Calvary, Jesus experienced four excruciating wounds in his body as he died for the sins of humanity. The Roman soldiers pierced his body while he was suspended above the earth creating wounds in his hands, feet, head, and side. The four wounds that Christ received are prophetic echoes of the Four Square Reality of God for evangelism. Each wound released the supernatural power and authority that God has given to the Body of Christ (Church) over spiritual and natural forces of creation in the earth realm in our evangelistic efforts. Each wound released four different aspects of the evangelistic nature of Christ's sacrifice for mankind. The nature of Evangelism is to reintroduce humanity to God in such a way that it creates an awareness that motivates people to build intimate relationships with God and each other. Evangelism also has to reunite humanity with God in order to share divine communion with Him and each other. Furthermore, evangelism must re-enlighten humanity to greater knowledge of God's guidance and protection to lead them in an understanding of how to fulfill the will of God in the earth realm. Finally, evangelism has to re-engage humanity with the power of God to overcome the forces of the enemy in kingdom building in themselves, their families, their ministries and within the kingdom of God.

David Jones And The Craft Of Theology written by Elizabeth R Powell and has been published by Bloomsbury Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-10-01 with Religion categories.

This is an imaginative exploration of the art of David Jones which addresses Christian teaching through engagement with selected artistic works: a poem, a painted inscription and a wood engraving. Elizabeth R. Powell's study does not just enable readers to understand Jones but also to use his kind of loving attention in their own lives – which, Jones would argue, is theology's most important task. Through close readings of material objects, Powell draws the reader into the participatory, performative and dialogical possibilities of the craft of theology. She frames an older style of theology in a distinctive and modern way, as a graced human practice and a place of transforming relation with the divine. Powell argues that Jones's art works offer places of beauty in which to 'become beauty' along the way. Located at the cross-section of theology, literature and the arts, this volume shows that being interdisciplinary is nothing less than finding ways for theology and humanity to be more richly itself.

Profound reflections on the cross that help you to meditate on and marvel at the sacrificial love of Jesus. This book can be used as a devotional, especially during Lent and Easter. These profound reflections on the cross from David Mathis, author of The Christmas We Didn’t Expect, will help you to meditate on and marvel at Jesus’ life, sacrificial death, and spectacular resurrection-enabling you to treasure anew who Jesus is and what he has done. Many of us are so familiar with the Easter story that it becomes easy to miss subtle details and difficult to really enjoy its meaning. This book will help you to pause and marvel at Jesus, whose now-glorified wounds are a sign of his unfailing love and the decisive victory that he has won: “He was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on him, and by his wounds we are healed.” (Isaiah 53:5) This book can be used as a devotional. The chapters on Holy Week make it especially helpful during the Lent season and at Easter.

Art And Faith written by Makoto Fujimura and has been published by Yale University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-01-05 with Religion categories.

From a world-renowned painter, an exploration of creativity’s quintessential—and often overlooked—role in the spiritual life “Makoto Fujimura’s art and writings have been a true inspiration to me. In this luminous book, he addresses the question of art and faith and their reconciliation with a quiet and moving eloquence.”—Martin Scorsese “[An] elegant treatise . . . Fujimura’s sensitive, evocative theology will appeal to believers interested in the role religion can play in the creation of art.”—Publishers Weekly Conceived over thirty years of painting and creating in his studio, this book is Makoto Fujimura’s broad and deep exploration of creativity and the spiritual aspects of “making.” What he does in the studio is theological work as much as it is aesthetic work. In between pouring precious, pulverized minerals onto handmade paper to create the prismatic, refractive surfaces of his art, he comes into the quiet space in the studio, in a discipline of awareness, waiting, prayer, and praise. Ranging from the Bible to T. S. Eliot, and from Mark Rothko to Japanese Kintsugi technique, he shows how unless we are making something, we cannot know the depth of God’s being and God’s grace permeating our lives. This poignant and beautiful book offers the perspective of, in Christian Wiman’s words, “an accidental theologian,” one who comes to spiritual questions always through the prism of art.
