Das Buch nimmt die Frage zum Ausgangspunkt, inwiefern sich die Gefühlsqualität filmischer Bilder analytisch qualifizieren lässt. Lassen sich Prinzipien und Muster audiovisueller Komposition als Fixpunkte einer Wirkungsästhetik des Films fassen? Als Zugang dient zunächst Musiktheorie: Wenn visuelle und auditive Gestaltungsmittel des Films in gemeinsamen, audiovisuellen Prinzipien der Filmkomposition aufgingen, dann sollten sich emotionstheoretische Modelle zur Wahrnehmung von Musik auch auf das filmische Bild als audiovisuelles Wahrnehmungsganzes beziehen lassen. Vor diesem Hintergrund wird – über eine Reihe exemplarischer Filmanalysen – eine, die vermeintliche Grenze von Bild und Ton virtuos umspielende, rhythmische Dimension des aktuellen Hollywood-Kinos empirisch rekonstruiert und theoretisch reflektiert. Schritt für Schritt, von Theorien zur Filmmusik, über Überlegungen zur Phänomenologie audiovisueller Bilder, bis hin zu einem Modell der verkörperten Erfahrung rhythmisch-kinetischer Wahrnehmungsmuster, wird so eine Theorie audiovisueller Rhythmen entfaltet – und aufgezeigt, inwiefern sich diese rhythmische Dimension audiovisueller Bilder als ein Zugang zu intersubjektiven Strategien der Gefühlslenkung im Kino fassen lässt.

Metaphors in audiovisual media receive increasing attention from film and communication studies as well as from linguistics and multimodal metaphor research. The specific media character of film, and thus of cinematic metaphor, remains, however, largely ignored. Audiovisual images are all too frequently understood as iconic representations and material carriers of information. Cinematic Metaphor proposes an alternative: starting from film images as affective experience of movement-images, it replaces the cognitive idea of viewers as information-processing machines, and heals the break with rhetoric established by conceptual metaphor theory. Subscribing to a phenomenological concept of embodiment, a shared vantage point for metaphorical meaning-making in film-viewing and face-to-face interaction is developed. The book offers a critique of cognitive film and metaphor theories and a theory of cinematic metaphor as performative action of meaning-making, grounded in the dynamics of viewers' embodied experiences with a film. Fine-grained case studies ranging from Hollywood to German feature film and TV news, from tango lesson to electoral campaign commercial, illustrate the framework’s application to media and multimodality analysis.

Enacting the Worlds of Cinema offers a substantial reconfiguration of the textual roots of modern film narratology. By giving sustained attention to cinema's material-affective modes of communicating its stories and embedding its audience in atmospheric, kinetic, and multisensorial worlds, this book maintains that film narratives are less representations than they are enactments; brought forth through the interactions of the felt body and the film material. The book defends this enactive and media-anthropological thesis by reworking a series of established film narratological key concepts including the diegesis, mood/atmosphere, and the distinction between diegetic and non-diegetic sound. Die vorliegende Studie versucht, eine neue Perspektive auf das Genre Fantasy zu entwickeln und zugleich zu ergründen, inwieweit es eine spezifische Affinität zwischen der Fantasy und dem Medium Videospiel gibt. In Auseinandersetzung mit gängigen Zuschreibungen an das Genre – es sei politisch reaktionär und ästhetisch stumpfsinnig – wird eine transmediale Poetik der Fantasy entwickelt, die zugleich eine politische Einschätzung des Genres erlaubt. Die Fantasy zielt darauf, so die These, das Gefühl einer "Sehnsucht nach dem ganz Anderen" zu gestalten, worin immer auch eine Herausforderung an die Historizität eines gegebenen Gemeinwesens beschlossen ist. Das Medium Videospiel wiederum erlaubt es, dieses ästhetische Gefühl in besonderer Weise zu erfahren, legt es die Auffaltung seiner fantastischen Welten doch buchstäblich in die Hände der Spielerinnen und Spieler. Was das konkret bedeutet, wird in poetologischen Analysen von künstlerisch herausragenden Spielen wie Dark Souls, Skyrim oder Hellblade greifbar. Darin erschließt die Studie der wissenschaftlichen Auseinandersetzung mit dem Videospiel neue Möglichkeiten, stellt ein genuin ästhetisches Denken mit den audiovisuellen Bildern einzelner Spiele doch ein Desiderat der Game Studies dar.

Film theory has always regarded metaphor as relevant for both constituting and understanding cinematic meaning. With its theses on embodied thought, the cognitive-linguistic theory of conceptual metaphors has initiated an upswing in research on metaphor and audiovisuality across disciplines. By engaging with these premises, this book develops a transdisciplinary perspective on audiovisual images, metaphor, and cinematic meaning that is at the interface between linguistic metaphor research oriented towards language use and the theory of audiovisual media as movement-images developed in film studies. It positions itself critically towards works that take up a semiotic-linguistic approach or are influenced by cognitive film theory, and that are caught up in the code-model of the sender-receiver paradigm of communication. A universal in-depth semantics that disregards cinematic dynamics is hereby countered by the idea of metaphorizing as a spectatorial activity: a dynamic process of perceiving, feeling, and understanding modelled by the movement figurations of audiovisual images. Through detailed analyses of diverse cinematic formats – from Hollywood films to political reports – this monograph shows that, and how, metaphorizing is a mode of cinematic thinking structured by the performativity of audiovisual images.
