Introduction by Luca Dotti and Foreword by Giambattista Valli A gorgeous, sophisticated celebration of Audrey Hepburn’s lifelong connection to the City of Light, featuring all the places in Paris she loved most, illustrated with vivid photographs, and featuring never-before-published stories about her films, family, friendships, photoshoots, and fashions. One of the world’s most iconic actresses and one of the world’s most iconic cities together in one extraordinary volume. There has always been a special connection between Audrey Hepburn and Paris. In Audrey Hepburn in Paris, Meghan Friedlander, curator of the fan site Rare Audrey Hepburn, and Audrey’s son Luca Dotti offer a unique look at the legendary actress’s life and love affair with the City of Light. The influence of Paris on Audrey is visible in everything from her films to her fashion choices to the friendships she cherished. Through rare or never-before-published photographs, quotes, and anecdotes, this intimate book offers an intriguing portrait of the star in all her many facets—from the roles she played in films to her roles as devoted mother, doting pet owner, avid gardener, and devoted humanitarian, all played out against the backdrop of this special place that was ever present in her memories. Audrey Hepburn in Paris gives us a behind-the-scenes glimpse of her life there—capturing her favorite sights, sounds, and shops, always with a characteristic sense of charm, glamour, and joie de vivre that is perfectly Parisian. Each chapter focuses on a different aspect of Paris that made it so precious to Audrey, from famous films, chic couture, fabled photoshoots, and elegant events to the quieter moments with family and friends rarely seen by the public, including her friendship with her close companion and go-to designer Hubert de Givenchy. Illustrated with 200 full-color and black-and-white photographs, packed with tender, funny, and glamorous personal stories told by Audrey and those who knew her best, Audrey Hepburn in Paris reveals this beloved star as never before—and pays homage to the city that shaped so much of Audrey’s life, through Audrey’s eyes.

Intermediate Diploma Thesis from the year 2004 in the subject American Studies - Culture and Applied Geography, grade: 2.0, Ruhr-University of Bochum (Philologie), course: American Expatriates in Paris, language: English, abstract: Nowadays, it has become quiet around various Hollywood genres of the Classic Period of cinema. In the time between both World Wars, and also soon after WWII, Hollywood filmmaking meant entertainment to a frustrated and humiliated world audience. Especially dance-comedy- and musical-genres became more picturesque, especially because of Technicolor, the plots less melodramatic and the actors followed a progressive and innovative typecast. Particularly the world of the Hollywood film musical opened up new possibilities when presenting a fictional world in their studios that enchanted an international audience. Hollywood spared no expenses and pains to explore particularly European capitals to promote a dream as well as their understanding of the American way. To which extent Hollywood created an image of Paris that gained acceptance with a global audience? And in how far can be said that American female stars changed their outer and inner appearance, in order not to correspond to obsolete Hollywood typecast. In my work I would like to give a better impression of what historically happened in American filmmaking, that glorified and idealized the French capital; and in French filmmaking, that searched for new themes, settings and individuals. In the first chapter a historical outline of the time from the 1920s onwards, as well as a brief introduction into the structures of the American- and French-film industry will illustrate to what extent Paris turned out to be an aesthetic and significant feature in motion pictures of that time. In the following it is of my concern to analyze the City of Light & Love and its international reputation. My analysis leads to one specific aspect of filmmaking – the divergence between the American female (stereo-) typology and European gender roles during the postwar years of the 50s and 60s. Audrey Hepburn serves as a well-known example, which is considered to be a representative for European subculture, French haute couture and American fairy-tale dreams. I try to illustrate in how far Audrey Hepburn changed the female image during a time in which anybody preferred blond femininity instead of brunette individuality. My aim is to find out how much Paris served as the ideological medium – both in French- and in Hollywood-filmmaking.

A charming, illustrated gift book combining two timelessly stylish subjects - Audrey Hepburn and the city of Paris. Both classic, both inimitable, both fashion icons - Audrey Hepburn and Paris are a match made in heaven. Falling in love with the city at a young age, Audrey returned to Paris again and again in some of her most celebrated films (Sabrina, Funny Face, How to Steal a Million, Charade) wearing outfits from her favourite Parisian couturier, Hubert de Givenchy, and creating some of the most significant fashion moments of the twentieth century. Audrey in Paris brings together over 100 stunning photographs of her most iconic moments in the city, from film stills and behind-the-scenes shots to candid images of Audrey enjoying the city as a visitor. The book also includes a bespoke illustrated map showing her favourite spots. "I never understood what makes me so special," mused Audrey Hepburn. The daughter of a Dutch baroness, Hepburn first won international acclaim with her role as a princess in the 1953 film Roman Holiday, and she maintained a rare grace and elegance throughout her life that millions have adored and tried to emulate. Audrey Hepburn: A Photographic Celebration showcases the film star, who also worked as a UNICEF goodwill ambassador. This book is packed with great quotes from the woman herself and those who admire her (including Hollywood directors and movie stars) as well as engaging trivia and beautiful images of Audrey in all phases of her career. "I've been in pictures over thirty years, but I've never had a more exciting leading lady than Audrey," enthused Gary Cooper, her Love in the Afternoon costar. Audrey Hepburn: A Photographic Celebration features everybody's favorite leading lady with her leading men, including such luminaries as Gregory Peck, Fred Astaire, George Peppard, Albert Finney, William Holden, Humphrey Bogart, Henry Fonda, Rex Harrison, Peter O'Toole, Sean Connery, Richard Dreyfuss, and Cary Grant along with her real-life costar, her first husband— Mel Ferrer. This lovely book about this classic lady will delight both the casual and die-hard Audrey fan, as well as anyone with an eye for classic elegance.
