Im ausgehenden 19. Jahrhundert fanden sich in ganz Europa Künstlerinnen und Künstler in landschaftlich reizvollen Gegenden zusammen und verhalfen der Freiluftmalerei zur Blüte. Die Sehnsucht nach unberührter Natur einte sie mit adligen und bürgerlichen Reisenden, die an der See und in den Gebirgen nach Abstand von den Zwängen der urbanen Lebenswelt suchten. Im Verlauf des 20. Jahrhunderts entwickelte sich die Erholungsreise schließlich vom Privileg der Gesellschaftseliten zum Massenphänomen. Ahrenshoop war Teil dieser Entwicklung. Im Zuge der Ansiedlung von Landschaftsmalern entfaltete sich eine touristische und kulturelle Infrastruktur und der kleine Küstenort gelangte zu unerwarteter Bekanntheit: Aus der Künstlerkolonie wurde das Ostseebad Ahrenshoop. Das Lebens- und Arbeitsumfeld der Einheimischen verschmolz zunehmend mit dem touristischen Freizeit- und Erlebnisraum. Seine Anziehungskraft auf Künstler, Kunstinteressierte und Touristen hat Ahrenshoop bis heute nicht verloren. Das kulturhistorische Erbe als Malerkolonie ist dabei ein wichtiger Wirtschafts- und Imagefaktor, den es zu schützen gilt.

There is no generally valid, recognised definition of what landscape actually is. On the basis of its relatedness to the environment, to aesthetics, territory, society, politics, economics, geography, planning, ethnology and philosophy, the concept of landscape is considered to be a "composite" notion shaped by a thousand years of Central European ideas and of literary and art history. In other words, the very term "landscape" is ambiguous and it is used in different ways both in the scholarly world and everyday speech. The aim of this volume is to present various possible approaches to the phenomenon of "landscape". Far from laying any claim to be exhaustive or comprehensive we have simply tried to do justice to the overarching interdisciplinary approach of the Zentrum für Landschaftsinterpretation und Tourismus (ZELT: Centre for Landscape Interpretation and Tourism) by singling out and addressing individual instances of this fascinating multifaceted phenomenon.

Rabbi Samuel Hirsch (Thalfang 1815 – Chicago 1889) was instrumental in the development of Reform Judaism in Europe and the USA. This volume is the first lengthy publication devoted to this striking personality whose significance was no less than that of his contemporaries Abraham Geiger and David Einhorn. En route from Thalfang via Dessau and Luxembourg to Philadelphia, Hirsch left his mark on societal, religious, and philosophical developments in manifold ways. By the time he was appointed Chief Rabbi of the Jewish community in Luxembourg in 1843, he had already written many of his most important works on the philosophy of religion. In them he engaged in debate with the Young Hegelians on the importance of Judaism, the religion that, more than any other, enabled the human actualization of freedom so central to Hegel’s philosophy. Over time Hirsch took an increasingly radical stance on issues such as Jewish rituals and mixed marriage. The goal of his reforms was not assimilation. He strove to strengthen Judaism to meet the demands of modernity and enable its survival in the modern era. Hirsch’s story is key to understanding the transnational history of Reform Judaism and the struggle of Jews to secure a place in history and society.

Er erhält ein Stipendium, das er zunächst ablehnt, da er eine Studienreise geplant hat, die ihm einen Überblick über die Lebensweise der Aborigines der Gegenwart auf dem südamerikanischen Kontinent verschaffen soll. Danach studiert er Jura an der Universidad Católica in Santiago. Seine Professoren sind beeindruckt von seinen Fähigkeiten. Nach dem erfolgreichen Studium eröffnet er ein eigenes Anwaltsbüro und arbeitet als Dozent an der Universität.
