Dieses Buch über das 'Sonderkommando' Auschwitz rekonstruiert auf der Grundlage zahlreicher, zum Teil noch unveröffentlichter Zeugenaussagen und schriftlicher Quellen die dramatischen Ereignisse des Aufstands der jüdischen KZ-Häftlinge gegen ihre SS-Bewacher am 7. Oktober 1944. Mehr als eine Million Juden wurden von den Nationalsozialisten in Auschwitz ermordet. Es waren jüdische Häftlinge, Mitglieder des sogenannten »Sonderkommandos«, die gezwungen wurden, die Leichen aus den Gaskammern herauszuholen und in den Krematorien zu verbrennen. Am 7. Oktober 1944 erhoben sich die Häftlinge gegen ihre Peiniger. Sie steckten das Krematorium mit den Gaskammern in Brand, töteten die Bewacher und flüchteten. Bereits unweit von Birkenau wurden sie gestellt und ermordet. Von dem Moment an, als der erste Stein auf die SS-Männer geworfen wurde, bis zu dem Moment, als die Leiche des letzten Aufständischen verbrannt worden war, vergingen etwa 12 Stunden. Der Historiker Gideon Greif und der Journalist Itamar Levin haben in den vergangenen Jahrzehnten mit Überlebenden gesprochen und Niederschriften der Häftlinge ausgewertet. Ihr Buch verfolgt die Ereignisse und die diversen Aufstandsplanungen, die der Revolte vorausgegangen sind, zeichnet den Aufstand nach und legt die Folgen für die Überlebenden dar. Die Autoren verschaffen so der einzigen bewaffneten Häftlingsrevolte in der Geschichte des Lagers Auschwitz-Birkenau den ihr gebührenden Platz in der Erinnerung an den Holocaust.

Doch was verbarg sich hinter dieser Arbeitseinheit, die offensichtlich die Vernichtungspolitik Hitlers vorantrieb und entgegen der nationalsozialistischen Rassenideologie fast ausschließlich aus Juden bestand? Wie gingen die Häftlinge des Sonderkommandos damit um, an dem Massenmord ihrer eigenen Landsleute beigetragen zu haben? Um diese Fragen zu beantworten, werden das Sonderkommando im Allgemeinen, die von ihnen zu verrichtende Arbeit und ihre Handlungsmöglichkeiten näher betrachtet. Wie sich die Existenz im Sonderkommando auf den Geist der Häftlinge auswirkte, wird in dem Punkt „psychische Herausforderungen“ dargestellt. Ziel dieser Arbeit ist es, die Absichten herauszuarbeiten, die sich hinter dem Sonderkommando-Aufstand vom 07. Oktober 1944 verbargen. Dabei wird selbstverständlich der Aufstand in seinen Grundzügen vorgestellt, jedoch ist dieser hinsichtlich der Leitfrage eher hintergründig. Der Fokus soll auf den inneren Vorgängen und den äußeren Bedingungen der Häftlinge liegen, die Aufschluss über ihre Hoffnungen und Absichten geben.
