In Australia in 1922, novelist DH Lawrence had a number of nightmares that were to haunt his novel, Kangaroo, which he started writing in the coastal village of Thirroul in May, and completed in Taos in America four months later. The most famous one provided a chapter ("The Nightmare") in his Australian novel, touched off by a scarifying encounter with the leader of the secret army Lawrence ran across in Sydney. "It was as if the silvery freedom suddenly turned, and showed the scaly back of a reptile, and the horrible paws", he wrote. Those blood-caked paws were not only the metaphorical extremities of the sinister organisation he had stumbled on in Australia, but the unwelcome attentions of its "bear-like" secret army leader, portrayed in the novel as Benjamin Cooley. For, hidden in the text of Kangaroo, Robert Darroch has discovered a hitherto unrecognised homoerotic encounter that, paradoxically, gives the lie to accusations of homosexual tendencies in probably the 20th-century's most misunderstood author.

Twenty stories of horror, the supernatural, and ghostly hauntings. These tales show the way in which the Gothic form has been transposed to a new, alien environment--Australia! The outback, the desert, the bush are imbued with strange forces and beings that European explorers and fossickers must fathom and overcome. The colonists struggle to cope with the harsh landscape and climate, and are frequently claimed by it. The land itself seems almost a malignant force that exacts a terrible revenge on those who challenge it or wander thoughtlessly into its desert wastes. Thus, in many of the stories reprinted here, characters range across a landscape in which the supernatural can reach out and snatch the unwary at any time. Characters frequently fall victim to the bush; indeed, often it is the children, symbols of innocence and European naïveté, who fall victim to the evil "spirits" lurking just beyond human ken. Doig has resurrected these marvelous haunts from rare magazines and equally scarce collections, and has provided hard-to-find information about the authors and the times in which they lived. For any aficionado of the classic macabre tale, this anthology will be a treasure trove of chilling reading!

This pioneering work provides in-depth coverage of 76 horror films produced in Australia, where serial killers, carnivorous animals, mutants, zombies, vampires and evil spirits all receive the "antipodean" cinematic treatment unique to the Land Down Under. Titles covered were released between 1973 and 2010, a period coinciding with the revival of the long-dormant Australian film industry in the early 1970s, and continuing into the second wave of genre production spurred by the international success of the 2005 chiller Wolf Creek. The Cars That Ate Paris, The Last Wave, Roadgames, Razorback, Outback Vampires, Queen of the Damned, Black Water, and The Reef are among the titles represented. Each film is covered in a chapter that includes a cast and credits list, release information, contemporary reviews and DVD availability, as well as a synopsis and in-depth notes about the story, filmmaking techniques, acting performances, recurring themes and motifs, and overall effectiveness of the film as a work of horror.

Nightmare experiences have been documented for hundreds, and in some cases, thousands of years. The advancement of sleep technologies has greatly contributed in clarifying the specific elements that define the nightmare phenomena. Contemporary understandings identify different types of nightmares and describe this phenomenon as the most common form of disturbed dreaming. In addition, epidemiological studies report that nightmares are more prevalent amongst the general population than once thought. The 'negative' aspect about having any type of nightmare, is that although the psychology (mental structures) of the dream are either fictitious or activations of past memories, the mind in the dream state is unable to distinguish reality from fiction. Therefore, the physiological and emotional reactions to those fictitious mental structures are very real to the dreamer.
