Excerpt from Austro-Hungarian Life in Town and Country Austro-hungarian, though it is the only name we can give to the dominions of the Emperor Francis Joseph, is apt to be somewhat misleading. The Germanic Austrians and the Hungarians, or Magyars, taken together, form less than half the total population. The majority of the Austro Hungarian peoples, therefore, belong to races which are neither Austrian nor Hungarian, properly so called. Most of them are of Slavonic origin; but they, too, are broken up into numer ous races, more or less distinct from one another in language, religion, and habits of life. Czechs, Croatians and Servians, Ruthenes, Poles, Slo vaks, and austrian-bulgarians are all Slavonic races, nearly akin to, and sometimes identical with, others who dwell beyond the frontiers of austria-hungary. Quite separate from all these are races more nearly allied to the Latin group, such as the Roumanians or Wallachians and Italians in part of the Austrian Tyrol and the Coast-lands. Nor are these all. There are, be sides, Over two million Jews, and considerable fragments Of other races - Greeks, Turks, and Gipsies. This volume introduces, through a series of freshly researched studies, new perspectives on the history of European urban culture from the eighteenth to the twentieth century. The approach is an international one, with essays on Austria-Hungary, France, Germany, Great Britain and Italy, and the authors drawn not only from Europe, but also the USA and Japan. The essays examine a range of specialist aspects of culture, such as gardening, spa towns, painting, and music. At the same time the contributors also explore jointly several broader interconnected themes - health, nature, the arts and cultural institutions, leisure, and tourism - of central importance to the cultural identity and development of the modern European town.

Alfred Nobel made his name as an inventor and successful entrepreneur and left a legacy as a philanthropist and promoter of learning and social progress. The correspondence between Nobel and his Viennese mistress, Sofie Hess, shines a light on his private life and reveals a personality that differs significantly from his public image. The letters show him as a hypochondriac and workaholic and as a paranoid, jealous, and patriarchal lover. Indeed, the relationship between the aging Alfred Nobel and the carefree, spendthrift Sofie Hess will strike readers as dysfunctional and worthy of Freudian analysis. Erika Rummel’s masterful translation and annotations reveal the value of the letters as commentary on 19th century social mores: the concept of honour and reputation, the life of a "kept" woman, the prevalence of antisemitism, the importance of spas as health resorts and entertainment centres, the position of single mothers, and more generally the material culture of a rich bourgeois gentleman. A Nobel Affair is the first translation into English of the complete correspondence between Alfred Nobel and Sofie Hess.
