Inhaltsangabe:Einleitung: Heutzutage ist das systemische Denken und Handeln die Leitlinie in der Sozialen Arbeit. Doch oft wird dabei vergessen, dass das größte System in dem wir agieren unsere direkte räumliche Umgebung ist, sie erschafft die äußeren Bedingungen unserer sozialen Interaktionen und bestimmt damit maßgeblich deren Qualität und Ausrichtung, bestimmt, mit wem wir überhaupt in sozialen Kontakt kommen können. In contemporary European and American urban policy and politics and in academic research it is typically assumed that spatial concentrations of poor households and/or ethnic minority households will have negative effects upon the opportunities to improve the social conditions of those who are living in these concentrations. Since the level of concentration tends to be correlated with the level of spatial segregation the 'debate on segregation' is also linked to the social opportunity discussion. This book explores the central questions in urban and housing studies: Do poor neighbourhoods make their residents poorer? Does the neighbourhood structure exert an effect on the residents (behavioural, attitudinal, or psychological) even when controlling for individual characteristics of the residents? This issue has offered a locus for multi-disciplinary investigations on both sides of the Atlantic, and this volume demonstrates the rich geographical, sociological, economic and psychological dimensions of this issue. This book was previously published as a special issue of the journal Housing Studies.

Multi-Ethnic Metropolis is based on international comparative research on ethnic segre gation patterns and policy reactions at local and national level. The objective was to achieve a broader, European perspective. For the acquisition of the information on which this book is based, we relied heavily on our colleagues abroad and their network of relations, since a great deal of factual data and information on the policies pursued is usually not available in a freely accessible form and can only be obtained through persons who know their way around. Eventually, in formation was provided by about seventy people (data administrators, policymakers at local and state level, politicians, academic researchers, representatives of interest groups, etc. ). The names of all people that contributed to this study are mentioned in the list of persons who were interviewed. Is area and community regeneration enough to challenge the negative perceptions of a stigmatised housing estate? The authors of this report argue that, unless a housing estate's image problems are effectively challenged alongside regeneration, stigma will remain. This report is the first to look for solutions to estates' image problems as a means of ensuring that the improvements made by regeneration processes are concrete and long-lasting.Challenging images examines three housing estates which have long-established problem reputations but which have experienced substantial regeneration. The report provides detailed evidence of the perceptions of estate residents, residents of neighbouring areas and local stakeholders such as regeneration partners, employers, journalists and estate agents.
