Losing someone to suicide can open up a world of pain, confusion and grief, and for people with ASDs, the effect can be acute and extremely challenging. Reaching out to fellow Aspies, Lisa Morgan proffers her insight and advice to ensure that others on the autism spectrum don't have to face suicide loss alone. Written from a first-hand account, this astonishingly honest book looks at the immediate aftermath, and how emergency responders can help, as well as the long-term implications of living with suicide loss for individuals on the autism spectrum. The book describes common difficulties after experiencing suicide loss, such as beginning to comprehend the death of a loved one and managing their estate, as well as matters more specific to people on the autism spectrum, such as overstimulated sensory issues and difficulties with misunderstandings and miscommunication at an already chaotic time. The book will also help those who aren't on the autism spectrum to understand how best to help someone with autism who is coping with suicide loss, as well as what not to do.

How People With Autism Grieve And How To Help written by Deborah Lipsky and has been published by Jessica Kingsley Publishers this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-07-28 with Psychology categories.

The book is an honest, first-hand account of how people with autism deal with the loss of someone in their life. Unlike the non-autistic response, people with autism, when faced with overwhelming or stressful situations, will favour solitude over sharing their emotions, tend to focus on special interests, and become extremely logical, often not expressing any emotion. This behaviour often leads to the belief that people with autism lack empathy, which is far from the case. Through the description of personal experience, and case studies, the book explores how people with autism feel and express the loss of a loved one, how they process and come to terms with their feelings of grief, and offers practical and detailed advice to parents and carers on a range of sensitive issues. These include clear instructions on how best to support someone with autism through the grieving process, how to prepare them for bad news, how to break the bad news, how to involve them in the funeral or wake, and how best to respond to later reactions. The final chapter explores the issue of why children and teens with autism can be drawn to death as a special interest, and explains that the interest is not normally a morbid one.

From Stormy Seas To Calmer Waters: A Story Of Autism, Loss And Spiritual Growth documents the arduous journey of Áine & Gerry Crosse whose family must navigate the unscripted world of Autism and Mitochondrial disease. It is their goal to shed light on a struggle rarely seen from the outside, to end the stigma that parents of autistic children often face, to answer questions to which there are so few answers, and to offer hope to the parents of Autistic children who find themselves with none. Told in the deeply-insightful and clear-cutting voices of Áine & Gerry, their story covers the aspirations, the expectations, the gruelling trials and the testing failures of parenting with chronically ill children. And yet, in the face of adversity, there is also a theme of hope and a wealth of knowledge earned and shared as a testament to their strength and resilience. With the birth of Áine & Gerry's first child, their world was irrevocably changed by a series of diagnoses that would challenge everything they imagined of parenthood. In a world unfit for children, of endless tests, of hospital wards and spinal injections, where talk of death and complications becomes both real and ordinary, where fear becomes the language of each day, Áine & Gerry found in themselves the will and the courage to not only survive but thrive against the odds. Faced with the prospect that their children might not survive, it became their prerogative to re-define parenting, to fight back against tirades of bleak news and bottomless grief, to answer questions that no parent should ever have to consider, and to navigate a path into darkness with hope and grounded optimism. In the face of such hopeless circumstance, the story of All That We Never See shines through with a combination of Áine's inspirational resolve and Gerry's unshakable strength and support; offering a glimpse into faith and depression, grief and tragedy, and into a roadmap littered with wisdom, and coloured with shades of extraordinary commitment. And then Gerry died of a massive heart attack.

Exploring contemporary theory and practice surrounding loss and bereavement for people with intellectual disabilities (ID), this book brings together international contributors with a range of academic, professional and personal experience. This authoritative edited book looks at diverse experiences of loss across this population whether it be loss due to transition, the loss or death of others, or facing their own impending death. The book begins by offering theoretical perspectives on loss and compassion, bereavement, disenfranchised grief, spirituality, and psychological support. It then addresses contemporary practice issues in health and social care contexts and explores loss for specific communities with ID including children, individuals with autism, those in forensic environments, and those at the end of life. Identifying inherent challenges that arise when supporting individuals with ID experiencing loss, and providing evidence and case studies to support best practice approaches, this book will be valuable reading for students, academics and professionals in the fields of disability, health and social care.

An Autistic Perspective: Death, Dying and Loss is a short book sharing how death, dying, and loss are experienced from the perspective of someone with autism, it explains the observable behaviours, and the thinking behind these behaviours, and what you can do to help the autistic individual to manage these experiences The topics of death, dying and loss have interested me since I was a young child. From early on in my life I noticed that people seemed to be uncomfortable talking about these subjects. People would tell me it was morbid, it upsets them, they didn't want to think about it, but to me it was interesting, as it is a part of life that you can't escape. Death, dying and loss will happen to everyone. In September 2014 my dad died, and then in August 2016, my granddad. People started asking if I was okay and telling me it must be so upsetting, and how sad they felt for me. I realised I didn't think about death in this way. I started to process how I think about death, dying, and loss and realised it could be interesting to people to gain insight into how my mind processes these things. I've had people say that they wish they processed things more like how I do, so perhaps some of this will be of help to people in how they can manage death, dying and loss. It is important to note that although I am writing about my own autistic perspective that this perspective won't be shared by all people with autism. Everyone, autistic, and non-autistic, thinks differently. I think there are some similarities that most people with autism will recognise, but they may not share how certain traits express for me personally. Hopefully what I share here will also be of help to parents and carers of those with autism giving some insight into the mind of those with autism helping to explain behaviours they may see and some ideas about how best to approach the subjects of death, dying, and loss with those with autism. In the chapter on loss the main focus is on relationship breakups and on transitions we face, like transitioning from one school to another, or from one job to another, or from living at home to independent living. Although death involves loss and dying involves the awareness that loss will be inevitable, I have tried to keep these areas within their own chapter. In the chapter about dying and death I share about my experiences of people dying and the positive and negative aspects of my way of being in relation to those who are dying, and on death I share about my experiences of death, and how I respond to the death of loved ones. My hope is that by going into detail in an honest and frank way this will help to give insight into the autistic mind, and how my mind processes these areas of life. Throughout the chapters I will share some tips and ideas that parents, carers, partners or friends can do to help the autistic individual, and to understand them and interact with them in a way that respects their model of the world and way of managing things, even if that is almost an alien way to a neuro-typical individual. Then in the conclusion chapter I round up the topics of loss, dying and death, and break down the triad of impairments which are the three areas autistic traits fall into for diagnosis, and go through some areas of these which are common among many with autism sharing what you can do to help the person with autism manage loss, dying and death, and I share some of the additional needs they may have and how these can impact on their handling of loss, dying and death.
