Global awareness of autism has skyrocketed since the 1980s, and popular culture has caught on, with film and television producers developing ever more material featuring autistic characters. Autism in Film and Television brings together more than a dozen essays on depictions of autism, exploring how autistic characters are signified in media and how the reception of these characters informs societal understandings of autism. Editors Murray Pomerance and R. Barton Palmer have assembled a pioneering examination of autism’s portrayal in film and television. Contributors consider the various means by which autism has been expressed in films such as Phantom Thread, Mercury Rising, and Life Animated and in television and streaming programs including Atypical, Stranger Things, Star Trek: The Next Generation, and Community. This thesis focuses on the portrayals of autism and Asperger's in film and television in the fourteen year period between 2000 and October 2013. As diagnoses of the condition have grown in this time, so too have the number of popular media presentations of autistic spectrum disorder, which could influence the general population's perceptions (Green, Garst, & Brock, 2004). While Rain Man (Levinson, 1988) still has an impact on popular perspectives and representations of autism, the examination of contemporary media is critical to understanding the characterisations of the disorder in the current period and the perceptions potentially affected by them. This thesis aims to provide a comprehensive examination of trends in the depiction of the condition in movies and television and how these portrayals have changed over time. A qualitative and quantitative, longitudinal process was implemented through a category system and applied to a total of fifty motion pictures and television series. The category system collected data related to audience reach, character demographics, educational and workplace inclusion, relationships, commonly portrayed traits, standard narratives of texts containing autistic spectrum disorder, and character agency. The representation of autism and Asperger's was found to be varied. The was no single characterisation of those on the spectrum, although white, middle class, males with Asperger's were the most commonly shown. A shift toward educational and workplace inclusion was observed, although the perpetuation of some stereotypes noted in earlier research and/or deriving from Rain Man, like speech patterns and special interests, was also noted. Additionally, there was a movement away from standard narratives depicting characters on the spectrum with little agency and spectacular skills, and toward depictions focusing on complex characters with ASD. These results are indicative of a shift in fictional, visual media to represent autism and Asperger's in a more sympathetic way.

With sequels, prequels, remakes, spin-offs, or copies of successful films or franchises dominating film and television production, it sometimes seems as if Hollywood is incapable of making an original film or TV show. These textual pluralities or multiplicities—while loved by fans who flock to them in droves—tend to be dismissed by critics and scholars as markers of the death of high culture. Cycles, Sequels, Spin-offs, Remakes, and Reboots takes the opposite view, surveying a wide range of international media multiplicities for the first time to elucidate their importance for audiences, industrial practices, and popular culture. The essays in this volume offer a broad picture of the ways in which cinema and television have used multiplicities to streamline the production process, and to capitalize on and exploit viewer interest in previously successful and/or sensational story properties. An impressive lineup of established and emerging scholars talk seriously about forms of multiplicity that are rarely discussed as such, including direct-to-DVD films made in Nigeria, cross-cultural Japanese horror remakes, YouTube fan-generated trailer mash-ups, and 1970s animal revenge films.
