Excerpt from Auto De Fé and Jew In the following chapters the writer has attempted to sketch the effect of the Inquisition in Spain and Portugal, more particularly in regard to the Crypto-Jews who came within its purview, and to collect data as to its outward expression, as evinced in the auto de fé. Lists have been compiled which set forth in chronological order the various autos which took place in Spain and Portugal and their American and Indian colonies since the establishment of the Holy Office, under Ferdinand and Isabella, until its final abolition, early in the nineteenth century. Though necessarily incomplete, these lists comprise nearly 2,000 autos de fé - a number far in excess of anything hitherto recorded - and they will serve, in some measure, as a reliable indication of inquisitional activity. It was at first contemplated to restrict the lists to such autos only as were known to have penanced Jews, but, as the manuscript and printed material accumulated, it was felt that the compilation would be more useful if it were made as complete as possible. Mohammedan, Lutheran, Philosopher, Mystic, and Freemason were, in turn, the peculiar objects of the heretic baiters, but there was no interval of any appreciable length during which there were not some Judaizers deemed worthy of punishment and persecution. Still it must not be assumed that at every auto de fé a Jew was butchered. Lea, the historian of the Inquisition, has in his epoch-making works thrown new light on the subject he has made bis own. Excerpt from The Inquisition and Judaism: A Sermon Addressed to Jewish Martyrs, on the Occasion of an Auto Da Fe at Lisbon, 1705 On enquiring into the true motives that can possi bly induce Israelites to renounce the faith Of their fathers, we cannot divest ourselves of the suspicion that a craving for mundane honors, and an unruly ambition upon which religious sentiment holds no check, may have great weight with some men, and may lead them to prefer the momentary gratification wh ch the parade and circumstance of power confers, to the favor of the Supreme Being and the approbation of conscience. To attempt to argue with such un principled men, if such there be, would be utterly hopeless for little can the words of mortals avail with persons who are deaf to the voice of God and reckless Of their eternal bliss. Others, again, there are, whose abject poverty ren ders them Obnoxious to the pecuniary bait held out by the wily agents of the Society. We are hardly prepared to suggest a remedy in this case, indisposed as we are to attempt to bind men to their creed by mere worldly considerations: yet would we venture to urge on the consideration of the more Opulent bers of our community, the absolute necessity of taking a deep and lively interest in the condition of their poorer brethren, of ascertaining their mental and physical wants, and of endeavouring to protect them. The late Mr. Wigan's cabinet of Jewish coins was not acquired for the National Collection, but a hope may be expressed that the collection formed by the Rev. H. C. Excerpt from The History of the Jews IT is not frequent that an author on any Jewish subject receives the encouragement of a demand for a second edition of his book. My volume of Jewish history which is again submitted to the public, in tended primarily as a manual of instruction, is re vised chiefly by being brought up to date. This re vision became necessary owing to the great changes which the World War has produced in Central and Eastern Europe. Desiring not to enlarge the book too much, I have added merely the most important facts and names in modern Jewish history. In the chap ters dealing with the older epochs, only a few in significant additions have been made. Other changes are merely textual. It still remains for the intelligent teacher to explain the facts given in the book which, by the very nature of its intention, makes dry read ing for the uninitiated. Every history, no matter how large, is bound to be selective. My book, therefore, like every other on the subject, will be Open to criticism in regard to omissions. In the modern period especially, I have no doubt that some one will find certain names omitted, but I have conscientiously weighed the question in every instance and believe to have been impartial and to have deserved from fair-minded critics the Tal mudic compliment - that an author is to be com mended both for what he includes and for what he excludes.
