Se normalmente si intende l'autobiografia come il racconto retrospettivo del proprio vissuto a partire da un punto d'osservazione nel presente, Goliarda Sapienza reinventa il genere, immaginando una scrittura che accompagna a intermittenza lo scorrere della vita. Lettera aperta, il romanzo d'esordio, e Il filo di mezzogiorno raccontano la turbolenta nascita di una scrittrice che ha fatto di tutto per non diventarlo: Goliarda è la bambina guerresca che non cammina mai perché corre sempre, ma è al contempo la donna adulta che la ricorda. In Io, Jean Gabin la protagonista è ancora Goliarda bambina, ma il filtro questa volta è l'identificazione con l'icona virile e anarchica del cinema francese. I due romanzi successivi, L'università di Rebibbia e Le certezze del dubbio, vedono un cambio di stile e di prospettiva: l'io autobiografico si mette in disparte prestando la sua voce alle donne incontrate a Rebibbia e poi nel «carcere fuori dal carcere» della metropoli romana, in cui vaga alla ricerca della sorellanza intuita e ormai perduta. A scorrere le pagine appassionanti di questa autobiografia sorge un sospetto: e se tutte le contraddizioni alla fine si rivelassero coerenza? Coerenza di verità e bellezza dell'insieme della sua opera.

Goliarda Sapienza's The Art of Joy was written over a nine year span, from 1967 to 1976. At the time of her death in 1996, Sapienza had published nothing in a decade, having been unable to find a publisher for what was to become her most celebrated work, due to its perceived immorality. One publisher's rejection letter exclaimed: 'It's a pile of iniquity.' The manuscript lay for decades in a chest finally being proclaimed a "forgotten masterpiece" when it was eventually published in 2005. This epic Sicilian novel, which begins in the year 1900 and follows its main character, Modesta, through nearly the entire span of the 20th century, is at once a coming-of-age novel, a tale of sexual adventure and discovery, a fictional autobiography, and a sketch of Italy's moral, political and social past. Born in a small Sicilian village and orphaned at age nine, Modesta spends her childhood in a convent raised by nuns.Through sheer cunning, she manages to escape, and eventually becomes a princess. Sensual, proud, and determined, Modesta wants to discover the infinite richness of life and sets about destroying all social barriers that impede her quest for the fulfilment of her desires. She seduces both men and women, and even murder becomes acceptable as a means of removing an obstacle to happiness and self-discovery. Goliarda Sapienza (1924-1996) was born in Catania, Sicily in 1924, in an anarchist socialist family. At sixteen, she entered the Academy of Dramatic Arts in Rome and worked under the direction of Luchino Visconti, Alessandro Blasetti and Francesco Maselli. She is the author of several novels published during her lifetime: Lettera Aperta (1967), Il Filo Di Mezzogiorno (1969), L'Università di Reibbia (1983), Le Certezze Del Dubbio (1987). L'Arte Della Gioia is considered her masterpiece.

Sono ormai tanti i lettori che mi domandano di Goliarda Sapienza. Desidera giustamente ogni buon lettore conoscere di più da chi ha vissuto fino all’ultimo con la sua vita, e tanti anni ha passato con le sue opere. Chi era realmente Goliarda Sapienza. Un così forte interesse non può lasciarmi indifferente perché tocca un punto sensibile del mio passato con lei. Lascio questo ritratto che riflette per forza la Goliarda mia - il lettore è avvertito - con l'unico rammarico di non poter sapere se vi si sarebbe riconosciuta almeno un po'. Un gioco che m'avrebbe divertito.

The present edited collection of essays on the Sicilian author Goliarda Sapienza includes contributions from established and emerging scholars working in the field of contemporary women’s writing. Essays in this volume examine Sapienza through multiple perspectives, taking into account the articulation of subjectivity through autobiographical writing and the complex representation of gender and sexual identities. Vengono così presentate e dibattute nelle loro reciproche connessioni la «logica della domanda e della risposta», la concezione della metafisica quale scienza storica diretta a determinare i presupposti di ogni dottrina filosofica, e quella della storia come autocoscienza dello spirito e scienza delle cose umane; oltre all’esame di quei problemi storici e archeologici concreti che costituiscono il campo d’applicazione delle sue teorie epistemologiche. Intrisa di riferimenti all’idealismo crociano, l’Autobiografia è anche una reazione contro la scuola imperante del «realismo», responsabile secondo Collingwood dell’involuzione della filosofia inglese. Grazie a una non comune capacità argomentativa, per cui anche le pagine più dense di passaggi logici hanno sempre una chiarezza e semplicità esemplari, l’Autobiografia può essere considerata ancora oggi la migliore introduzione all’universo mentale di Collingwood.

Il suo stile non insegue il nulla, lo smaschera pagina dopo pagina: ci offre sapere, incontri inaspettati. Il gesto autobiografico – scrive Celada Ballanti – mira alla spersonalizzazione, è spersonalizzante di per sé, si arrende all’apparire dei fantasmi illusori che, invece, si rivelano sopravvissute divinità della coscienza del proprio mai poter essere. Un saggio, dunque, che smaschera attese e luoghi comuni, che sveste le frasi fatte di quanti ancora ritengono l’autobiografia un pacifico e parresiastico, lucroso, approdo alla conoscenza febbrile di un sosia che poi almeno un poco ci assomigli.
