Not illustrated. 1871 edition. Excerpt: ... 5 Whitsunday came to hand, Mr Lochore disposed of his stock, preparatory to going to Glasgow. I heard that he afterwards went to London; but I was told lately that he died the other day in Glasgow. I was the only one of his Kilmarnock apprentices who continued at the printing business. By Mr Lochore's influence, I was transferred to the Courier Office in Ayr. This newspaper was begun and carried on by the Rev. Mr Cuthill, one of the ministers of the Old Church. Archibald and James Bell had been his chief managers in the business, and things did not go well with him. He had to compound with his creditors, and gave up a portion of his stipend, by way of satisfying their demands. By this time my brothers, John and Robert, were both resident in Kilmarnock. They were intimate with John Curle, coach-driver of the Telegraph between Ayr and Kilmarnock, and being themselves "knights of the whip," easily procured for me a seat to the county town. Through their influence, the Curle family interested themselves in finding lodgings for me. On my arrival, I was accordingly handed over to a friend of theirs, in Garden Street, called He must have been well advanced in years, perhaps about 76. "Aunty Betty," a good sort of woman, somewhat advanced in years, but still active and lithe of limb. She was rather talkative at times, and I knew most of her history ere long. She had married, late in life, an old seaman, of the name of Neil M'Callum, who had passed most of his life on board one of the King's cutters. Old Neil was somewhat testy, but generally had the worst of it when he tried a fall with his wife. She was too clever for him. They were both dissenters, and belonged to the now all but extirpated race of Cameronians. She was a Cameronian by descent...

Excerpt from Men and Events of Forty Years: Autobiographical Reminiscences of an Active Career From 1850 to 1890 A full appreciation Of Mr. Grinnell's chapters, in the minds of those who knew him, carries with it a vivid impression Of his remarkable personal qualities. The reverse of tall, Of very solid build, with a short, strong neck and fearless temperament, all his sturdy fighting endowment took the direction Of indomitable energy in enterprise and Of intrepid assertion Of everything right and good; and the always overflowing surplus of his vital energy took the shape of superabounding good nature. His manner was the freest and cheeriest to all persons, on all occasions; his plans and Opinions, of the largest pattern; his disposition, utterly devoid of selfishness and any trace Of meanness; his feeling, so bright and hopeful as to exclude the thought of anything dark in the uni verse, except it might be present injustice to be righted, or want and snfiering to be relieved. Though not a theoretical, he was a practical communist, holding every hour and power and possession ready for the common good. Indeed, he must have struck every thoughtful acquaintance as a rare, even unexampled, phenomenon of exhaustless activity and generosity. Of course, with such a nature he was frank, never stinting expression of his thought and feeling, in any presence whatsoever; and so frank that sometimes, as in this book, his felicitation over all persons, all things, when it included himself might seem like egotism, whereas he most cer tainly held a modest Opinion of himself and his deeds. In fact, he lived outside Of himself in enterprises, in beneficence, and in a singularly worshipful regard toward men justly eminent, as shown by much Of eulogistic tone in this book. Errol Harris was a greatly respected and influential philosopher and public intellectual in North America, Britain and Europe in the 20th century. His autobiography provides insight into the influences that contributed to the shaping of his remarkable character and career. In these recollections Harris reveals a keen eye as he presents memories of growing up in several parts of South Africa in the early 20th century; childhood and youth in a close-knit but sometimes financially challenged Jewish family of fairly strict religious observance; an account of inspiring intellectual experiences as an undergraduate and graduate at Rhodes College, Grahamstown (1925-29); teaching black South African university undergraduates at Fort Hare in 1929-30; studying philosophy at Oxford (1931-33) with many of the most celebrated figures on the Oxford faculty from that period; teaching at British public schools in the mid-1930’s; a short, unhappy, but adventure-filled stint as secretary to the Minister of Mines for Southern Rhodesia; tales of his experiences as an Education Officer for the British Colonial Service, inspecting remote village schools on horseback in Basutoland and Zanzibar in the late 1930’s, just prior to the outbreak of the war. He also recounts the religious experiences over these years that eventually led him to join the Church of England. Over the course of his long life, Errol demonstrated a serious concern for the common weal, along with a strongly-developed social conscience. Confronted with a range of historic challenges, including some of the most acute evils arising in the course of the twentieth century, he met the most serious of them head-on with a direct, resolute, and public response, calling upon all to embark on a path of sanity and reason toward a goal of mutual well-being. The book also covers his research and his writing of his fully realized and comprehensive philosophical system on the concept of mind, or consciousness, and its relation to the world. Excerpted from the Introduction.
