The Autobiography of a Repaired Physician : Mental Health as Seen from Both Sides of the Desk is a trilogy. Book I deals with my life before, during and after the emergence of an attack of bipolar disorder. The shattering consequences of the disorder and the personal history that precede it are discussed in great clinical and personal detail. My chief concern is that the reader comprehend how the past, present, and future come into play in understanding the outcome in the treatment of this destructive and deadly disease. Book II concerns the social stigma associated with having a history of the disorder and the many pitfalls clinically, psychologically and socially that exist for an individual, such as myself who is charged with the professional responsibility of caring for people suffering from similar affl ictions. Book III is about my adventures in the real world as I have seen it. It relates to the madness of our world in which the ever present and infuriating search for power prestige and possessions appear unfortunately to be the primary determinants of behavior in our society. Many of my closest friends have tried to dissuade me from writing about this issue because they feared I would be exposing myself to further social stigma. I feel strongly that those who have suffered from the destructive effects of the spectrum of bipolar disorder must know how treatment works and what pitfalls to avoid in treatment. As a physician it is my duty to heal myself and with the help of some very talented colleagues. I have been able to do just that. My struggle continues and in that sense more books will be written. I would like to especially acknowledge the help of my wife Barbara, who has stuck with me through thick and thin, and my children Miranda, Alexander and Victoria who love each other and me.

Excerpt from A Mutilated Life Story: Strange Fragments of an Autobiography; Sketches of Experiences as a Nurse and Doctor in an African Hospital and in the American West Dr. Auguste Marie Michel began her medical career as a missionery nurse in Africa where she gave her first year of service to all kinds of malignant infectious fevers and pestiferous diseases in that country. The heroine of that dark and dangerous period won distinction for her remarkable courage. Her general fitness for emergencies was recognized and lauded by the French military doctors, after which she was promoted interne of the hospitial, manager of the dispensary and clinical teacher of all the native medical students. She remained in Africa five years. Returning to France Dr. Michel became externe pupil of the famous Professor Crozat. She worked in his Maternity Hospital and was credited and recommended by him to the faculty of medicine in Paris. Dr. Michel came to America in 1893 and taught at a training school until she entered the medical college under the preceptory of Professor R. Ludlum, President of the Faculty of Medicine of the Medical College in Chicago. She graduated from the National Medical University and Hospital, Chicago, Ill., March 30th, 1899. Dr. Michel is an essayist on the diseases and treatment of children and author of the book entitled "The Truth in Spite of the Devil," of which the present volume is an outcome. I went to Edinburgh to study medicine, after being coached specially for the preliminary examination. I did not feel in the least inclined to become a model student: I was to some extent interested in the subjects which I had to study, but I occupied myself with so many things in general that I could never approach anywhere near the exemplary. Indeed, I always looked upon an exemplary student as a most uninteresting narrow-minded, and one-sided specimen of humanity. It seems still an open ques tion whether it is advisable, or even whether it is right seeing that it calls for confessions. In the eyes of God the only alternative is a book of lies. Moreover, sitting down to write one's own life story has always loomed up before my imagination as an admission that one was passing the post which marks the last lap; and though it was a justly celebrated physician who told us that we might profitably crawl upon the shelf at half a century, that added no attraction for me to the effort, when I passed that goal.
