Giving his criticisms of Morris's first volume of poetry, The defence of Guenevere and other poems. A rare surviving letter between two of the giants of 19th century design and thought, both fervently in opposition to the 19th century British Industrial Revolution. Morris and Burne-Jones, both friends up at Oxford, made the acquaintance of the older John Ruskin during their Oxford days, and Ruskin in many ways became a model for Morris and his circle. The letter must have been a bit of a shock to the 24-year-old Morris as Ruskin critiques his first book of poetry The defence of Guenevere. Ruskin does give praise for several appealing passages but he lambasts what he judges to be distortions of the medieval record: "Good it is in many ways: wrong also in many ways ... It is all very generous & very intense, but too much of mere sensation in it ... Your people all live on love, and crimson and gold. Do you suppose that in the Middle Ages there were no heads fit for using as well as hearts, or that people couldn't think, inside of helmets? The only thing that I can make out you consider a head good for is to have hair on it – What a blessed book it is for the hair clippers!", telling Morris that it is also more obscure even than Browning. Despite the obvious connections between the two men, only two letters between them have come to auction in 50 years of auction records. The present letter sold in 1984, and a copy of an introductory letter from Ruskin to Morris in 1875, introducing Morris to Francis Weidermann, a young student of wallpaper design.

Based on the date and price, the book was likely 'Poems by the way.' Morris ends on a rather cantankerous note, remarking that his publishers ought to be handling the business end of things.
