Some new results which impact favorably upon the issue of automated topographic map interpretation are presented. Actually, the 'new' results consist of heretofore undiscovered applications of two concepts known to mathematicians and computer scientists for many years: binary search, and the normal vector. Binary search is extended by the technique from not only one to two dimensions, but arguably to three dimensions, since topographical maps are two-dimensional representations of three dimensional surfaces. Such maps are essentially sorted hierarchies of nested contours, which form a multiply- connected subdivision of the plane. The perimeter of a subdivision element is defined by a set of contours of extremal elevation and the edges of the map; a naming convention attaches a label to each element of the planar subdivision. Whenever one is afforded the luxury of dealing with a sorted data structure, one may invoke the power of binary search to achieve 0 (log n) time complexity during processing of a topographical query, where n is the number of contours which comprise a specific element of the planar subdivision. A topographical query is a request by a user to interpret the position of an arbitrary map coordinate, called query point, topographic map background. Acquiring spatial data for geoinformation systems is still mainly done by human operators who analyze images using classical photogrammetric equipment or digitize maps, possibly assisted by some low level image processing. Automation of these tasks is difficult due to the complexity of the object, the topography, and the deficiency of current pattern recognition and image analysis tools for achieving a reliable transition from the data to the high level description of topographic objects. It appears that progress in automation only can be achieved by incorporating domain-specific semantic models into the analysis procedures. This book presents refereed and revised papers presented at GREC 2001, the 4th IAPR International Workshop on Graphics Recognition, which took place in Kingston, Ontario, Canada in September 2001. Graphics recognition is a branch of document image analysis that focuses on the recognition of two-dimensional notations such as engineering drawings, maps, mathematical notation, music notation, tables, and chemical structure diagrams. Due to the growing demand for both o?-line and on-line document recognition systems, the ?eld of graphics recognition has an excitingand promisingfuture. The GREC workshops provide an opportunity for researchers at all levels of experience to share insights into graphics recognition methods. The workshops enjoy strongparticipation from researchers in both industry and academia. They are sponsored by IAPR TC-10, the Technical Committee on Graphics Recog- tion within the International Association for Pattern Recognition. Edited v- umes from the previous three workshops in this series are available as Lecture Notes in Computer Science, Vols. 1072, 1389, and 1941. After the GREC 2001 workshop, authors were invited to submit enhanced versions of their papers for review. Every paper was evaluated by three reviewers.
