Acquiring spatial data for geoinformation systems is still mainly done by human operators who analyze images using classical photogrammetric equipment or digitize maps, possibly assisted by some low level image processing. Automation of these tasks is difficult due to the complexity of the object, the topography, and the deficiency of current pattern recognition and image analysis tools for achieving a reliable transition from the data to the high level description of topographic objects. It appears that progress in automation only can be achieved by incorporating domain-specific semantic models into the analysis procedures. This thesis is an exploratory analysis of automated mapping protocols that can be used to support Terrestrial Ecosystem Mapping and Predictive Ecosystem Mapping in British Columbia. This thesis employs neighbourhood analysis of elevation and its derivatives to discriminate the bioterrain elements defined by Terrestrial Ecosystem Mapping standards. In achieving these standards, discrimination beyond the basic topographic forms presented in current research is explored. The method developed strives to be - easily implemented by mapping projects employing standard GIS software ; flexible so that the extracted topographic forms can be tailored to varying project objectives ; compatible with the hierarchical procedure employed in Terrestrial Ecosystem Mapping ; efficient and accurate in that the process is advantageous over manual mapping methods. The effect of data quality is addressed through an assessment of DEM data interpolation techniques and classification accuracy. Random and systematic artifacts of the DEM that influence the quality of the derivatives are explored. The issue of scale-dependent shape is addressed by the constraints of objective-based mapping in which a map scale is specified and the most basic shape elements are aggregated into contiguous classes by a roving neighbourhood window. The results indicate that basic topographic elements are mapable from relief as well as first and second order elevation derivatives. These results give preliminary accuracy of 80% based on the three classes tested. The procedure requires decisions at every step, but it is felt that this complements the traditional mapping process in that it is hierarchical, and requires a synthesis of extensive knowledge of vegetation and landscape across many scales. The successful implementation of applications in spatial reasoning requires paying attention to the representation of spatial data. In particular, an integrated and uniform treatment of different spatial features is necessary in order to enable the reasoning to proceed quickly. Currently, the most prevalent features are points, rectangles, lines, regions, surfaces, and volumes. As an example of a reasoning task consider a query of the form "find all cities with population in excess of 5,000 in wheat growing regions within 10 miles of the Mississippi River. " Note that this query is quite complex. It requires- processing a line map (for the river), creating a corridor or buffer (to find the area within 10 miles of the river), a region map (for the wheat), and a point map (for the cities). Spatial reasoning is eased by spatially sorting the data (i. e. , a spatial index). In this paper we show how hierarchical data structures can be used to facilitate this process. They are based on the principle of recursive decomposition (similar to divide and conquer methods). In essence, they are used primarily as devices to sort data of more than one dimension and different spatial types. The term quadtree is often used to describe this class of data structures. In this paper, we focus on recent developments in the use of quadtree methods. We concentrate primarily on region data. Some new results which impact favorably upon the issue of automated topographic map interpretation are presented. Actually, the 'new' results consist of heretofore undiscovered applications of two concepts known to mathematicians and computer scientists for many years: binary search, and the normal vector. Binary search is extended by the technique from not only one to two dimensions, but arguably to three dimensions, since topographical maps are two-dimensional representations of three dimensional surfaces. Such maps are essentially sorted hierarchies of nested contours, which form a multiply- connected subdivision of the plane. The perimeter of a subdivision element is defined by a set of contours of extremal elevation and the edges of the map; a naming convention attaches a label to each element of the planar subdivision. Whenever one is afforded the luxury of dealing with a sorted data structure, one may invoke the power of binary search to achieve 0 (log n) time complexity during processing of a topographical query, where n is the number of contours which comprise a specific element of the planar subdivision. A topographical query is a request by a user to interpret the position of an arbitrary map coordinate, called query point, topographic map background.
