This book is intended for business professionals that want to understand the fundamental concepts of Artificial Intelligence, their applications and limitations. Built as a collaborative effort between academia and the industry, this book bridges the gap between theory and business application, demystifying AI through fundamental concepts and industry examples. The reader will find here an overview of the different AI techniques to search, plan, reason, learn, adapt, understand and interact. The book covers the two traditional paradigms in AI: the statistical and data-driven AI systems, which learn and perform by ingesting millions of data points into machine learning algorithms, and the consciously modelled AI systems, known as symbolic AI systems, which use explicit symbols to represent the world and make conclusions. Rather than opposing those two paradigms, the book will also show how those different fields can complement each other. All royalties go to a charity. “Demystifying AI reveals its true power: not as a mysterious force, but as a tool for human progress, accessible to all who seek to understand it.” Dr. Barak Chizi, Chief Data & Analytics Officer, KBC Group

Demystifying consciousness: how subjective experience can be explained by natural brain and evolutionary processes. Consciousness is often considered a mystery. How can the seemingly immaterial experience of consciousness be explained by the material neurons of the brain? There seems to be an unbridgeable gap between understanding the brain as an objectively observed biological organ and accounting for the subjective experiences that come from the brain (and life processes). In this book, Todd Feinberg and Jon Mallatt attempt to demystify consciousness—to naturalize it, by explaining that the subjective, experiencing aspects of consciousness are created by natural brain processes that evolved in natural ways. Although subjective experience is unique in nature, they argue, it is not necessarily mysterious. We need not invoke the unknown or unknowable to explain its creation. Feinberg and Mallatt flesh out their theory of neurobiological naturalism (after John Searle's biological naturalism) that recognizes the many features that brains share with other living things, lists the neural features unique to conscious brains, and explains the subjective–objective barrier naturally. They investigate common neural features among the diverse groups of animals that have primary consciousness—the type of consciousness that experiences both sensations received from the world and affects such as emotions. They map the evolutionary development of consciousness and find an uninterrupted progression over time, without inserting any mysterious forces or exotic physics. Finally, bridging the previously unbridgeable, they show how subjective experience, although different from objective observation, can be naturally explained.

Some of the prices we come across every day cause us few problems, while others seem mysterious, frustrating, and even unfair. In this refreshing and entertaining approach to the "dismal science," Greg Woirol shows how we, uniquely among living creatures, use markets and prices to help organize our lives. Ranging from the price of diamonds, to cell phone plans, high fashion, scalped tickets, Christmas gifts, and much more, chapters in Demystifying Economic Markets and Prices build on one another to explain hidden structural and behavioral patterns. Woirol brings clarity to the arcane world of economics, allowing readers to see patterns and meaning in a wide range of everyday prices and markets. Along the way, the author gives advice about how best to address the issues and opportunities that markets create for consumers.
