"Among the most influential models in contemporary behavioral science, self-determination theory (SDT) offers a broad framework for understanding the factors that promote human motivation and psychological flourishing. In this authoritative work, SDT cofounders Richard M. Ryan and Edward L. Deci systematically review the theory's conceptual underpinnings, empirical evidence base, and practical applications across the lifespan. Ryan and Deci demonstrate that supporting people's basic needs for competence, relatedness, and autonomy is critically important for virtually all aspects of individual and societal functioning."--Jacket.

Europe has reached a crisis point, with the call for self-determination and more autonomy stronger than it ever has been. In this book, renowned international lawyers give a detailed account of the present state of international law regarding self-determination and autonomy.Autonomy and Self-determination offers readers both an overview of the status quo of legal discussions on the topic and an identification of the most important elements of discussion that could direct future legal developments in this field. This is done through the examination of key issues in abstract and in relation to specific cases such as Catalonia, Italy and Scotland. The book extends past a simple assessment of issues of autonomy and self-determination according to a traditional legal viewpoint, and rather argues that utopian international law ideas are the breeding ground for norms and legal institutions of the future. This insightful book will be an invaluable read for international lawyers and political science scholars. It provides a clear, yet detailed, analysis of the issues Europe is facing regarding autonomy and self-determination in the face of historical context, also making it a useful tool for European history scholars.

Over the past twenty years an increasing number of researchers from various universities have been investigating motivational issues underlying the self-regulation of behavior. Using either Self-Determination Theory or closely related theoretical perspectives, these researchers have performed laboratory experiments, as well as field studies in a variety of real-world settings. In April 1999 thirty of these researchers convened at the University of Rochester to present their work, share ideas, and discuss future research directions. This book is an outgrowth of that important and fascinating conference. It summarizes the research programs of these social, personality, clinical, developmental, and applied psychologists who have a shared belief in the importance of self-determination for understanding basic motivational processes and for solving pressing real-world problem. Intrinsic Motivation written by Edward L. Deci and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-12-06 with Science categories.

As I begin to write this Preface, I feel a rush of excitement. I have now finished the book; my gestalt is coming into completion. Throughout the months that I have been writing this, I have, indeed, been intrinsically motivated. Now that it is finished I feel quite competent and self-determining (see Chapter 2). Whether or not those who read the book will perceive me that way is also a concern of mine (an extrinsic one), but it is a wholly separate issue from the intrinsic rewards I have been experiencing. This book presents a theoretical perspective. It reviews an enormous amount of research which establishes unequivocally that intrinsic motivation exists. Also considered herein are various approaches to the conceptualizing of intrinsic motivation. The book concentrates on the approach which has developed out of the work of Robert White (1959), namely, that intrinsically motivated behaviors are ones which a person engages in so that he may feel competent and self-determining in relation to his environment. The book then considers the development of intrinsic motiva tion, how behaviors are motivated intrinsically, how they relate to and how intrinsic motivation is extrinsically motivated behaviors, affected by extrinsic rewards and controls. It also considers how changes in intrinsic motivation relate to changes in attitudes, how people attribute motivation to each other, how the attribution process is motivated, and how the process of perceiving motivation (and other internal states) in oneself relates to perceiving them in others.

This monograph investigates the construct of autonomy in eastern settings by reviewing the evidence from debates that originate from both the cultures. Through empirical findings, it helps to look beyond the theories and principles of cross cultural differences. It describes autonomy by focusing on human needs that are innate, universal and essential to all humans, irrespective of their cultural or other differences. We hope that the information provided in this monograph will be insightful for the readers who are interested in the concept of autonomy use in classrooms for better results.

Conflicts over the rights of self-defined population groups to determine their own destiny within the boundaries of existing states are among the most violent forms of inter-communal conflict. Many experts agree that autonomy regimes are a useful framework within which competing claims to self-determination can be accommodated. This volume explores and analyses the different options available. The contributors assess the current state of the theory and practice of institutional design for the settlement of self-determination conflicts, and also compare and contrast detailed case studies on autonomous regimes in the former Yugoslavia, the Crimea, Åland, Northern Ireland, Latin America, Indonesia and Vietnam.

Autonomy arrangements have gradually become more numerous, & different developments in respect of autonomy can be discerned in the fields of international & domestic law. The patterns of autonomy are quite disparate, but because various fields of law treat autonomy in different ways, it is fruitful to inquire into the applications of autonomy & to ask what autonomy as such implies. Autonomy is a multi-faceted phenomenon which on the one hand contains the issue of devolution or decentralization of law-making or other normative powers in the institutional fabric of the country without any minority protection component; on the other hand it may in addition contain an explicit minority protection component designed to offer special protection to minority groups in society. Especially in the latter sense, the issue of effective participation of a minority in the government is an important issue, & in this respect, there is a connection between autonomy & a general understanding of democracy.

Autonomy And Well Being written by Hsiao-ching Chu and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2006 with Autonomy (Psychology) categories.

Self Determination Theory (SDT) posits that autonomy is essential to well-being across cultures (Deci & Ryan, 2002). To test this model cross-culturally, researchers have conducted several studies outside the United States (Deponte, 2004; Sheldon, Elliot, Ryan, Chirkov, Kim, Wu, Demir, & Sun, 2004). Although these studies supported SDT's position that autonomy predicted well-being, some studies in Asian Americans did not indicate the same results (d'Ailly, 2003; Iyngar & Lepper, 1999). The inconsistent results raise a question of whether this model is applicable to all cultures. In addition, studies about Asian populations often put all Asian ethnic groups under one unified category. Failure to recognize the uniqueness of each Asian ethnic group and its special cultural impact on autonomy may lead to misinterpretation of the results. Therefore, it is important to conduct studies in an individual Asian ethnic group. The present study is an attempt to discover whether SDT is applicable to cultures that do not value autonomy. It aimed to examine the relationship between autonomy and well-being in Chinese in the United States. This ethnic group was chosen because it is the largest sub-group of the Asian population and Chinese culture does not emphasize autonomy. Fifty-one Chinese students from three Chinese Student Clubs in the United States were recruited. They were asked to complete a packet of materials including demographic information, The Rosenberg Self Esteem Scale, The Satisfaction With Life Scale, and The General Causality Orientations Scale. Correlational and Multiple Regression Analysis revealed a positive relationship between self-esteem and life satisfaction, and that higher autonomy was related to higher self-esteem. However, no significant relationship was found between autonomy and life satisfaction. Moreover, autonomy and self-esteem were related. Finally, impersonal causality, age, and birth place predicted well-being in Chinese students in the United States.
