This book is a study of the various claims to authority made by the ancient Greek and Roman historians throughout their histories and is the first to examine all aspects of the historian's self-presentation. It shows how each historian claimed veracity by imitating, modifying, and manipulating the traditions established by his predecessors. Beginning with a discussion of the tension between individuality and imitation, it then categorises and analyses the recurring style used to establish the historian's authority: how he came to write history; the qualifications he brought to the task; the inquiries and efforts he made in his research; and his claims to possess a reliable character. By detailing how each historian used the tradition to claim and maintain his own authority, the book contributes to a better understanding of the complex nature of ancient historiography.

Die Aufsätze in diesem Band befassen sich mit gewissen Aspekten der Rolle der Wissenschaften in unserer Kultur. Im ersten Teil wird gefragt, ob die Wissenschaft einen Beitrag zu unserem Weltbild leisten kann, oder ob sie einzig dazu taugt, Voraussagen zu machen oder Erfahrungen zu ordnen in einer Welt, deren Züge durch andere überlegungen bereits festgelegt sind. Im zweiten Teil wird gefragt, ob die Methoden und Ergebnisse der Wissen schaft wirklich die immense Autorität haben, die man ihnen heute zuschreibt. Die Antwort auf die erste Frage lautet: die Wissenschaft kann eine Kosmolo gie im vollen Sinne des Wortes sein, sie ist in dieser Hinsicht der Religion, der Philosophie, dem Alltagsdenken, dem Mythos sicher nicht untergeordnet. Ich erreiche diese Antwort auf dem Umweg über die Diskussion eines Problems, das in der Literatur den etwas pompösen Namen 'Das Problem der Existenz theoreti scher Entitäten' erhalten hat. Die Antwort auf die zweite Frage lautet: die Wissenschaft ist anderen Ideolo gien aber auch nicht übergeordnet, sie hat keine höhere Autorität als jene. Diese Antwort erhalte ich in zwei Schritten. Erstens durch eine Kritik der Wissenschafts theorie, wo man ja zeigen will, warum die Wissenschaft so hervorragt. Zweitens durch eine Kritik der von den Wissenschaften selbst gemachten Ansprüche.

There is no doubt that Thomas Aquinas, together with Augustine, is among the most influential authorities in the history of Western Christian theology. Through the centuries, theologians and philosophers have interpreted Aquinas and (re-)constructed his thought in various ways. As a result of this, a very rich variety of theological and philosophical positions have appeared that claim to be inspired by the thought of Thomas Aquinas. Positions like these are often labelled as a form of 'Thomism'. Although this can be helpful in bringing some order into the history of thought, there is also a deceptive side to it. Any classification runs the risk of obscuring the multiplicity of interests that have inspired the use of Aquinas as authority. On closer investigation many questions arise. What aims did Aquinas' recipients have in mind and how did an appeal to Aquinas function in their attempts to reach these aims? To what extent has their adoption of Aquinas' ideas and approaches been successful or unsuccessful in answering new questions, and in meeting the problems of their times? And, finally, what can we learn from these divergent forms of 'Thomism'? To these questions the Thomas Institute at Utrecht devoted its second conference, which was held from Thursday December 14 to Saturday December 16, 2000. This book collects a selection of the studies that were presented.
