Au lendemain du cinquantième anniversaire de la libération des camps et alors qu'Élie Wiesel publie le second volet de ses Mémoires, on peut s'interroger sur la place exceptionnelle de cet écrivain dans la conscience de son époque. En quoi Élie Wiesel est-il un homme universel, porteur d'une parole universelle, telle est la question qui parcourt cet ouvrage. Premier écrivain à avoir reçu le prix Nobel de la paix, Élie Wiesel s'est de fait engagé d'une façon qui lui est toute personnelle : si son passé l'obsède - ce « passé qui ne passe pas » -, il n'est pas seulement un homme de la mémoire. Toute son œuvre nous livre un message pour demain. Toute l'œuvre et l'action de Wiesel en effet disent ce souci constant de penser l'avenir à l'aune des événements de ce siècle. Autour d'Élie Wiesel, se sont donc regroupés des hommes et des femmes de toutes disciplines et confessions. Leurs contributions s'organisent autour de trois axes principaux : le premier aborde l'œuvre même d'Élie Wiesel dans ses aspects tant linguistiques (racines yiddish, travail syntaxique et phonétique) que théologiques (comment dès lors dialoguer avec Dieu ?). Le deuxième se veut une extension en harmonique vers d'autres champs de pensée : la vocation médicale de l'homme, les rapports de la science et de l'éthique, les enjeux du déterminisme absolu... Un troisième temps fait place au dialogue entre juifs et chrétiens. De ces interventions se dégage un commun désir d'apporter du sens à notre époque car, comme le disait Malraux, « à quoi sert d'aller sur la lune, si c'est pour se suicider ? » . Moshe's Children presents the inspiring story of Moshe Zeiri, a Jewish carpenter responsible for rescuing hundreds of Jewish refugee children who had survived the Final Solution. During the liberation of Italy, Zeiri, a volunteer in the British Army in Italy, assumed responsibility for and vowed to help around seven hundred Polish, Hungarian, Russian, and Romanian children.
