Dans la continuite de l'ouvrage Relire Totalite et infini (Vrin, 2015), ce livre se consacre a la lecture et a l'interpretation d'Autrement qu'etre ou au-dela de l'essence (1974). Emmanuel Levinas y radicalise sa pensee par rapport a Totalite et infini (1961) en deplacant l'accent sur la question de la diachronie du temps et en montrant comment l'humain est travaille par une intelligibilite immemoriale qui n'appartient plus a l'ordre de la manifestation et qui n'est plus commande par la question de l'etre constituable par la conscience. Si l'on y retrouve des themes chers au philosophe deja abordes dans sa these de doctorat, ces derniers sont comme hyperbolises. Levinas reprend le fil de sa reflexion sur la diachronie du temps, qui n'est plus recuperable dans la patience du concept. Le present de la conscience porte toujours la trace d'un evenement deja passe, en se situant dans un temps plus ancien que tout passe rememorable. La figure ethique de la subjectivite porte la trace de cet evenement irrattrapable. Comment des lors penser l'articulation entre immanence et transcendance, entre essence et autrement qu'etre, entre l'assignation a la responsabilite et l'exigence de justice, entre l'exposition a l'autre et l'inspiration par l'autre, entre le Dire et le Dit?

Emmanuel Levinas (1906-1995) emerged as an influential philosophical voice in the final decades of the twentieth century, and his reputation has continued to flourish and increase in our own day. However, his writings and thought are challenging and difficult. The Oxford Handbook of Levinas contains essays that aim to clarify and engage Levinas and his writings in a number of ways.
