This volume of essays examines a short one month period in the life of the Catholic Church in 2013. From the announcement of the resignation of Pope Benedict XVI on 11 February 2013 through the election of Pope Francis on 13 March, these essays come from a number of writers, theologians and poets. Ave Atque Vale - Hail and Farewell - is how the Roman poet Catullus ends his elegiac tribute to his deceased brother and has always been used to mark an end and a beginning. Whether it was 600 or 900 years since a pope resigned, the action is unprecedented in the modern papacy. This volume of essays is edited by Michael Kelly SJ and has contributions by Anne Elvey, Andrew Hamilton SJ, Joe Hodge, Anne Hunt, Rachael Kohn, Brian Lucas, James McEvoy, Andrew McGowan, Constant Mews, Michael Mullins, Desmond O'Grady, Neil Ormerod, and Philip Harvey, as well as poets Barry Gittins, Brian Doyle and BA Green. Most of the pieces first appeared in Australia's Eureka Street magazine in February and March 2013.

First published in 1868, “Ave Atque Vale” is a poem by Algernon Charles Swinburne dedicated to French poet, art critic, and essayist Charles Pierre Baudelaire (1821–1867). Baudelaire's wonderful poems are known for their masterful use of rhyme and rhythm which, together with their Romantic exoticism, inspired a whole generation of poets including Arthur Rimbaud, Paul Verlaine and Stéphane Mallarmé. Algernon Charles Swinburne (1837–1909) was an English playwright, novelist, poet, and critic who famously wrote about taboo subjects including anti-theism and lesbianism. Swinburne's poetry often contains motifs of time, death, and the ocean, as well as references to historical figures including Sappho, Catullus, and Anactoria. “Ave Atque Vale” will appeal to poetry lovers and is not to be missed by those with an interest in the life and work of Charles Pierre Baudelaire. Other notable works by this author include: “Atalanta in Calydon” (1865), “Poems and Ballads” (1866), and “Songs Before Sunrise” (1871). Ragged Hand is proudly republishing this classic poem now complete with a specially-commissioned new biography of the author.

Music In Boston written by Bill F. Faucett and has been published by Lexington Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-04-29 with Music categories.

Music in Boston: Composers, Events, and Ideas, 1852–1918 is a history of the city’s classical-music culture in the period that begins a decade before the American Civil War and extends to the close of the Great War. The book provides insights into the intellectual foundation of Boston's musical development as revealed in the writings of its significant critics and thinkers, including John Sullivan Dwight, John Knowles Paine, William Foster Apthorp, and others. It also examines the influence of outsiders—Patrick Gilmore, Theodore Thomas, Richard Wagner, New York’s Metropolitan Opera, and Richard Strauss—on Boston’s performance and composition scene while also considering events that affected music in Boston, such as the building of the Music Hall, the acquisition of its Great Organ, the National Peace Jubilee, Chicago’s Columbian Exposition, Boston’s first Wagner Festival, and the rise and fall of the Boston Opera Company. Music in Boston also accounts for the ascent of the Second New England School of composers—John Knowles Paine, Edward MacDowell, George Whitefield Chadwick, Amy Beach and others—and discusses their key compositions and legacy. Finally, the book explores Boston itself: its transformations via immigration, its ever-changing topography, and its economy.
