Awakening to China's Rise provides the most comprehensive analysis to date of how Europe's major powers have responded to the re-emergence of China as a great power in world politics since the end of the Cold War. To do so, it puts forward a unique cross-regional comparison of how the major European powers (France, Germany and the United Kingdom) have confronted Chinese assertiveness both in the Asia-Pacific and in Europe. Firstly, it analyses their response to China's increasingly muscular regional posture in the Asia-Pacific through the development of diplomatic and security initiatives with partners in the region. Secondly, it delineates how they have confronted China's inroads into Europe, looking at the measures that they have taken to tackle Chinese investments in, and supply of, technologies in strategic sectors such as critical national infrastructures, dual-use technologies, and in the digital domain, including Huawei's 5G networks. A longstanding assumption in the IR literature has been that European foreign policies toward the People's Republic of China have been driven by a 'naïve' and self-interested focus on the economic opportunities presented by such a vast market, overlooking security considerations. This book challenges such common belief through a detailed examination of the policies of France, Germany and the United Kingdom from 1989 to the present. Its central argument is that, whereas this assessment aptly characterized the first two post-Cold War decades, Beijing's growing assertiveness after 2009 caused the three major European powers to awaken to China's rise. In the 2010s, heightened threat perceptions of China, coupled with increasingly competitive bilateral economic relations with the PRC, have gradually and cumulatively caused the hardening of their policy goals which, in turn, translated into the formulation of new policy instruments to confront such a challenge. To substantiate this argument, the book relies on a large body of previously undisclosed primary sources, including: 223 interviews conducted with senior officials in Europe (Berlin, Brussels, London, Paris), in the United States (Washington DC), and in Asia (Beijing, Shanghai, New Delhi, Seoul); declassified archival documents from France, the UK and Germany; leaked US diplomatic cables; and new data on European naval deployments.

“A major contribution to the history of nationality, religious identity, and governance in late imperial Russia.” —William G. Rosenberg, coauthor of Processing the Past From the time of the Crimean War through the fall of the Tsar, the question of what to do about the Russian empire’s large Muslim population was a highly contested issue among educated Russians both inside and outside the government. As formulated in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, the Muslim Question comprised a complex set of ideas and concerns that centered on the problems of reimagining and governing the tremendously diverse Russian empire in the face of the challenges presented by the modernizing world. Basing her analysis on extensive research in archival and primary sources, Elena I. Campbell reconstructs the issues, debates, and personalities that shaped the development of Russian policies toward the empire’s Muslims and the impact of the Muslim Question on the modernizing path that Russia would follow. “Readable, original, and endlessly interesting, Campbell’s book deserves the very highest praise.” —Journal of Islamic Studies “Campbell’s book shows how profound official Islamophobia paradoxically led to the preservation of earlier confessional structures, grudging non-interference with the spiritual and social life of most Muslim communities, a restraining hand on the actions (if not the rhetoric) of Orthodox missionaries, and a certain uneasy toleration.” —Slavonic and East European Review “A major contribution to the understanding of Russia’s ‘Muslim Question’—past and present . . . Recommended.” —Choice

This book analyzes the implementation of CSR reporting and codes of business conduct and ethics in the legal systems of the USA, Austria and China and their enforcement in international supply chain arbitrations. The book demonstrates that long-term profit maximization is increasingly intertwined with corporate ethics and CSR policies. In order to prevent window-dressing and greenwashing, certain control mechanisms and legal standards are required along the entire supply chain. This book introduces an ethics and CSR system recommending a reward-based whistleblowing mechanism, internal oversight by a CSR and Ethics Committee comprised of independent board members and at least one sustainability expert, and an external, independent and comprehensive assurance of CSR reports provided by auditing firms or newly formed governmental agencies consisting of certified CSR experts. The author emphasizes the significance for supply chain leaders to ensure contractual enforcement of their codes of business ethics and conduct along the supply chain. Against this background, the author created a comprehensive fictitious case scenario covering a supply chain dispute arising from the breach of the supply chain leader’s code of business conduct and ethics by a lower-tier supply chain member. The author acknowledges the fact that in most of the cases the governing law of international supply chain contracts is English law or law based on English law. Thus, the author discusses potential contractual claims for damages arising from a loss of profits caused by a loss of reputation resulting from violations of core provisions of the chain leader’s supplier code of conduct pursuant to English law. As international supply chain disputes usually involve more than two parties, and international arbitration is the ideal means for the resolution of these disputes, the book compares the arbitration rules for consolidations and joinders of some of the most significant international arbitration institutions: SIAC, ICC, AIAC, ICDR, VIAC, CIETAC and HKIAC. The book is directed at legal practitioners, legislators of various jurisdictions, board members of corporations, ethics and compliance officers, academics, researchers and students. It is the author’s main goal that the book serves as an inspirational source for the establishment or the improvement of a corporate ethics and CSR system preventing window-dressing and greenwashing and covering the entire supply chain. Furthermore, it is intended that students develop a deeper understanding for the enforcement of corporate ethics and CSR policies.

THE GREAT AWAKENING (PART 1) The Awakening is just that! Author Peter B. Meyer makes it soberingly clear that, unless we, as responsible adults take action now, the impact on ourselves and our children, the future generation, will be irreversible and nothing short of disastrous. The impact on what? The answer to that question is ominously wide reaching and includes the impact on socio-economics, geo-politics, education, health, culture and the environment. What makes Peter's message hard-hitting is that it is not mere theorization, but comprises hard facts, supported by statistics and references taken from alternative professional literature, websites, journals, and reports. The family is the foundation and cornerstone of our civilization. In the last six decades, it has been neglected and discriminated, while it is the 'nest' where our children are born, cared for and educated. Wake up! The Hidden Government is purposely destroying the family structure, and spreading the "Drug Culture" for their own profit, to finance black operations like terrorist attacks or False Flag attacks. This book covers distinct subjects like social matters, our debt-based monetary system, geopolitical issues, financial manipulation, a variety of other economic dilemmas, the welfare state with its 'cradle to grave' subsidy programs, and the intentionally rigged markets, which have created the present global economic crisis and will lead to the widespread bankruptcy of governments in the industrialized world. The Illuminati-Cabal-Globalists continued their pre-WW1 plan of gaining power, control, and profits by pitting a socialist East against a capitalist West, originally dubbed The Cold-War. In 2008, the world was intentionally thrust into an inflationary depression by imposing austerity, resulting in the suffering of all of humanity. The Illuminati controls the process of government, the process of information flow, the process of creating money, Big Pharma, Big Food, education, and finally, it controls a great number of aspects of all religions through infiltration and puppets on the payroll. People must wake up to the fact that their government commits fraud, they lie and are deceitful. Change in governance is critical, as is a free market of supply and demand - free of manipulation - Personal initiative and promotion through meritocracy should be the main ingredients - In our existing, broken system, wars are plotted decades in advance and are orchestrated to achieve the destruction of nations, depopulation, demoralization, and of course, power and profit for the 1% super-rich; i.e. the Illuminati and its Deep State, a Satanic cult that preys on mankind to establish its permanent hegemony. Through these devious means, the nations of the world today owe the Central Banks of this Cabal trillions, based on money that they print for the cost of paper and ink - out of thin air. They have established a disguised dictatorship, using sophisticated methods of social manipulation and mind control. This is the true meaning of the 'War on Terror'. It is not directed at 'Muslim terrorists'. It is directed at you and me. They create famines, wars, rumors of war, rendering the people robbed of their freedoms. The first step to a worldwide improvement is to abolish all Central Banks, the unbacked monetary system, central-planning, and fractional reserve banking. Then life on Earth will be as it was meant to be. The author proposes an abundance of remedies to the otherwise gloomy résumé of our present predicament. Read his words of advice and spread the message, to contribute to the change of course of this ship, our Earth! Our power is in our numbers, the weakness of the cabal! The Time for action is NOW! Our Future is determined TODAY!
