Tan Malaka's levensloop is vaak in mysterie gehuld.

Herawati Diah's journey began in 1917, when she was born into an upper-class priyayi family. While most intellectuals of the time were drawn to the Netherlands and western Europe for their studies, Herawati was the first Indonesian woman to obtain a degree from an American university. This later aroused the ire and the suspicion of the Dutch East Indies colonial authorities and she was imprisoned on her arrival back in Indonesia. With the arrival of the Japanese Imperial Forces in 1942, Herawati was released, once again free to resume her journey. Marriage to prominent journalist B.M. Diah, who later became ambassador to Czechoslovakia, Britain and Thailand as well as Information Minister in the Sukarno and Soeharto Cabinets, provided Herawati with privileged access and an insider's view on the struggles - and successes - of Indonesia's journey as an independent nation. In An Endless Journey: Reflections of an Indonesian Journalist, Herawati discusses the transition of Indonesia from a Dutch colony to an independent republic and the progress of five presidents as they have made their way across the turbulent Indonesian political stage. An Endless Journey offers a glimpse to the development of post-war Indonesia and provides fascinating reading for anyone interested in the life of one of Indonesia's most remarkable daughters.

From Jail to Jail is the political autobiography of Sutan Ibrahim gelar Tan Malaka, an enigmatic and colorful political thinker of twentieth-century Asia, who was one of the most influential figures of the Indonesian Revolution. Variously labeled a communist, Trotskyite, and nationalist, Tan Malaka managed to run afoul of nearly every political group and faction involved in the Indonesian struggle for independence. During his decades of political activity, he spent periods of exile and hiding in nearly every country in Southeast Asia. As a Marxist who was expelled from and became a bitter enemy of his country’s Communist Party and as a nationalist who was imprisoned and murdered by his own government’s forces as a danger to its anticolonial struggle, Tan Malaka was and continues to be soaked in contradiction and controversy. Translated by Helen Javis and with a new introduction from Harry A. Poeze, this edition of From Jail to Jail contextualizes the life and political accomplishments of Tan Malaka in one of the few known autobiographies by a Marxist of this political era and region.

Mochtar Lubis was one of Indonesia’s best-known newspaper editors, authors and cultural figures, with a national, regional and international prominence that he retained from the early 1950s until his recent death in 2004. This book traces the major events in the life of Mochtar Lubis, which is also a prism through which much of Indonesia’s post-independence history can be interpreted. This book is also the story of Indonesia in the second half of the twentieth century, when the people of the archipelago became an independent nation, and when print media and the influential figures who controlled and produced newspapers, played a pivotal role in national political, educational and cultural life, defining Indonesia. Editors with strong personalities dominated the industry and sparred with the nation’s leadership; Lubis was a vocal critic of the abuse of power and a thorn in the side of the country’s first two presidents, becoming synonymous with combative journalism. Under both Sukarno and Suharto, Lubis had his newspaper closed down and was imprisoned. As the only comprehensive biography of this towering figure, the book provides a unique insight into the history and development of media, literature and the political system in Indonesia.
