This title presents an introduction to the classical treatment of Backlund and general surface transformations; and includes detailed and accessible techniques for constructing both groups of tranformations which will be of great value to the scientist and engineer in the analysis of mathematical models of physical phenomena. Classical and recent examples of Backlund transformations as applied to geometry, nonlinear optics, turbulence models, nonlinear waves and quantum mechanics are given. The authors discuss applications of Lie-Backlund transformations in mechanics, quantum mechanics, gas dynamics, hydrodynamics, and relativity.

Solitons in Action is a collection of papers that discusses the concept of a wave packer or pulse known as a soliton. One paper reviews the development of the solitary wave concept, with emphasis on the difference between a solitary wave and a soliton. The Korteweg-deVries (KdV) equation shows the interactions between infinite sets of conservation laws and the inverse scattering transform method. The Backlund transform technique produces hierarchies of multisoliton solutions for nonlinear wave equations. The Gel-'fand-Levitan algorithm can effect an inverse scattering calculation that relates changes in the scattering data to changes in the solution of corresponding wave equation. One paper points out that concepts in differential geometry can show the fundamental nature of soliton behavior and the relationship between inverse scattering and the Backlund transformation. Solitons in action can be viewed as magnetic flux propagates through a gap (between two closely-spaced superconductors) in quantum units. This view results in a simplified procedure for perturbation expansions around multisoliton solutions. This collection can prove useful for researchers involved in the study of fluid mechanics, of pure and applied sciences, of mathematical sciences, and of wave theory.

The aim of this paper is to show that the theory of jet bundles supplies the appropriate setting for the study of Backlund trans formations. These transformations are used to solve certain partial differential equations, particularly non-linear evolution equations. Of course jets have been employed for some time in the theory of partial differential equations, but so far little use has been made of them in applications. In the meanwhile, substantial progress has been made in the study of non-linear evolution equations. This work has been encouraged by the dis covery of remarkable properties of some such equations, for example the existence of soliton solutions and of infinite se quences of conservation laws. Among the techniques devised to deal with these equations are the inverse scattering method and the Backlund transformation. In our opinion the jet bundle formulation offers a unifying geometrical framework for under standing the properties of non-linear evolution equations and the techniques used to deal with them, although we do not consider all of these properties and techniques here. The relevance of the theory of jet bundles lS that it legitimates the practice of regarding the partial derivatives of field variables as independent quantities. Since Backlund trans formations require from the outset manipulation of these partial derivatives, and repeated shifts of point of view about which variables are dependent on which, this geometrical setting clari fies and simplifies the concepts involved, and offers the prospect of bringing coherence to a variety of disparate results.

Solitons And The Inverse Scattering Transform written by Mark J. Ablowitz and has been published by SIAM this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1981-01-01 with Mathematics categories.

A study, by two of the major contributors to the theory, of the inverse scattering transform and its application to problems of nonlinear dispersive waves that arise in fluid dynamics, plasma physics, nonlinear optics, particle physics, crystal lattice theory, nonlinear circuit theory and other areas. A soliton is a localized pulse-like nonlinear wave that possesses remarkable stability properties. Typically, problems that admit soliton solutions are in the form of evolution equations that describe how some variable or set of variables evolve in time from a given state. The equations may take a variety of forms, for example, PDEs, differential difference equations, partial difference equations, and integrodifferential equations, as well as coupled ODEs of finite order. What is surprising is that, although these problems are nonlinear, the general solution that evolves from almost arbitrary initial data may be obtained without approximation. For such exactly solvable problems, the inverse scattering transform provides the general solution of their initial value problems. It is equally surprising that some of these exactly solvable problems arise naturally as models of physical phenomena. Simply put, the inverse scattering transform is a nonlinear analog of the Fourier transform used for linear problems. Its value lies in the fact that it allows certain nonlinear problems to be treated by what are essentially linear methods. Chapters 1 and 2 of the book describe in detail the theory of the inverse scattering transform. Chapter 3 discusses alternate methods for these exactly solvable problems and the interconnections among them. Physical applications are described in Chapter 4, where, for example, similarities between deep water waves and nonlinear optics become evident. Because of the fundamental role of linear theory, there is an extensive appendix that addresses the linear problems and their solutions.

This book is devoted to a classical topic that has undergone rapid and fruitful development over the past 25 years, namely Backlund and Darboux transformations and their applications in the theory of integrable systems, also known as soliton theory. The book consists of two parts. The first is a series of introductory pedagogical lectures presented by leading experts in the field. They are devoted respectively to Backlund transformations of Painleve equations, to the dressing methodand Backlund and Darboux transformations, and to the classical geometry of Backlund transformations and their applications to soliton theory. The second part contains original contributions that represent new developments in the theory and applications of these transformations. Both the introductorylectures and the original talks were presented at an International Workshop that took place in Halifax, Nova Scotia (Canada). This volume covers virtually all recent developments in the theory and applications of Backlund and Darboux transformations.
