Il lavoro presenta un'edizione critica e commentata sia dei frammenti del Libro del disegno, trattato autografo e idiografo del Bandinelli, sia del Memoriale, codice del XVII secolo redatto sotto la supervisione del nipote dell'artista, l'erudito Baccio Bandinelli il Giovane. Se il Libro del disegno viene inquadrato nell'ambito della trattatistica d'arte rinascimentale, con particolare riguardo al rapporto con il poligrafo Anton Francesco Doni e con le due lezioni accademiche di Benedetto Varchi sulle arti, il Memoriale è esaminato sotto il profilo filologico e codicologico: grazie al ritrovamento di documenti inediti, si è prestata attenzione alle stratificazioni testuali e alle interpolazioni documentarie attuate da Bandinelli il Giovane, riconducendo il codice a prassi scrittorie invalse negli eruditi fiorentini del primo Seicento e proponendo una soluzione a uno dei problemi più dibattuti nei recenti studi sulla letteratura artistica del Cinquecento.
