An ideal guide for the curious musician or for the musical parent, this book will turn the student from complete beginner to amateur pianist by teaching the first piece from one of the most influential texts in western music, the Well-Tempered Clavier by J.S.Bach. In the first part you will learn how to read music. Topics include how the notes on the keyboard are put down on paper, what the different types of notes are and how fast to play them relative to each other as well as playing with all fingers. The Prelude requires that you play with both hands at the same time, so in the second part you will get acquainted with the piece by breaking the piece down and learning how to play each hand separately in small parts. That isn't a method just for the complete beginner, but a route professionals also take in familiarizing themselves with various facets of a piece. It's good practice that builds a solid foundation. When the groundwork is complete, in the third part it will be time to start playing with both hands together. Again, we split the piece into bits and by practising a few bars at a time everything will come together. In the fourth part you will carry on playing the piece with both hands, only you will play longer sections than before. The whole piece will in fact be split into just three parts. The fourth step comes just before the grand finale, and in the fifth and final section it's time to play the whole piece, from the first to the last bar. All will be accomplished in 30 lessons and you will be able to play your first piece on the piano!
