In the densely populated urban neighbourhoods of Java, women manage their houses and their communities through daily exchanges of food, childcare, and labour. Their domestic work is based on local ideas of community cooperation and support, but also on the Indonesian government's use of women as unpaid social workers. Consequently, women are a pivotal point in both state-sponsored programs of domesticity and in the local practice of community exchange managed from individual houses. Back Door Java explores the everyday lives of ordinary urban Javanese from a new perspective on domestic space and the state. Using rich ethnographic description of a neighbourhood in Central Java, Newberry illuminates the ways in which state rule is intimately connected to the household and the community.

Banyak pelajaran yang dapat dipetik dari pintu belakang rumah kampung. Buku ini adalah sebuah buku etnografi perkotaan yang menyorot sebuah lingkungan kampung di sudut kota kraton Yogyakarta, Jawa Tengah, selama pemerintahan Orde Baru. Bertolak dari perspektif warga kampung itu buku ini mengupas budaya kelas pekerja sebagai cara untuk memahami interaksi antara masyarakat kampung dengan kekuasaan negara dan dampak kekuasaan negara, terutama pada pekerjaan dan kehidupan sehari-hari kaum perempuan. Berdasarkan kisah-kisah kehidupan kampung itu, buku ini dibagi atas tiga bagian yang secara ringkas dapat diungkapkan dengan istilah-istilah rumah, rumahtangga, dan rumah-kediaman. “Rumah” adalah arsitektur fisik rumah kampung dan hubungannya (arsitektur) dengan pola pertukaran sosial dan hubungan keluarga. Bagi warga miskin kampung, rumah tradisional Jawa jauh dari jangkauan, tetapi bentuk fisik rumah kampung masih mencerminkan nilai-nilai kunci dalam kehidupan bertetangga di kampung. Bab ini membahas perubahan-perubahan yang terjadi dalam satu rumah dan satu keluarga dalam lingkup sejumlah rumah yang memiliki pertalian darah. Seiring dengan meningkatnya kesejahteraan beberapa keluarga, perbaikan rumah dilakukan namun sambil tetap mempertahankan sejumlah aspek sosial kunci dari bentuk rumah. Rumah adalah sumberdaya ekonomi yang penting, yang tercermin dalam praktek-praktek kekerabatan. Karena itu hal-hal seperti mengasuh anak, mengangkat anak, warisan, hubungan kakak-beradik dan anak-anak juga dibahas dalam bagian ini. “Rumahtangga” diartikan di sini sebagai ekonomi rumahtangga, yang sering dibedakan dari ekonomi formal berdasarkan pekerjaan berbayar. Bagian ini mempersoalkan garis pemisah antara umum dan pribadi ini atas dasar kisah-kisah kaum perempuan kampung dan kegiatan mereka sehari-hari. Jaringan pertukaran antar-perempuan di kampung mendukung kegiatan-kegiatan budaya kampung, seperti slametan, tetapi jaringan pertukaran itu juga terkait dengan tugas dari pemerintah, yakni tugas bagi kaum perempuan untuk mendukung upaya meningkatkan kesehatan dan kesejahteraan warga masyarakat. Bab ini mengupas bagaimana kaum perempuan dengan cara-cara mereka mendukung penghidupan kaum laki-laki yang menganggur dan setengah menganggur dan anak-anak muda yang tinggal di kampung itu. Bab ini mengajukan argumen bahwa pembangunan masyarakat di bawah pemerintah Orde Baru melalui program-program seperti Pembinaan Kesejahteraan Keluarga atau PKK dimaksudkan untuk menghasilkan pekerja-pekerja yang sangat murah demi meningkatkan keunggulan banding Indonesia. Mendorong kaum perempuan untuk diam di rumah dan melakukan kegiatan ibu rumahtangga guna mendukung keluarga mereka dan masyarakat bertentangan dengan sejarah panjang kaum perempuan Jawa, yakni tradisi bekerja di luar rumah. Negara berhasil karena masyarakat digunakannya sebagai landasan bagi kesejahteraan sosial, pola yang juga digunakan oleh pemerintah kolonial Belanda dan pemerintah Jepang di zaman perang. Penggunaan kaum perempuan kampung sebagai alat untuk menghasilkan reproduksi sosial berbiaya rendah bertumpu pada ideologi kehidupan-rumahtangga-yang-tepat. Istilah “rumah-kediaman” di sini berkaitan dengan ide bahwa tempat kaum perempuan sejatinya adalah di rumah, mengasuh anak, masyarakat, dan, pada akhirnya, negara. Bagian ini membahas hasil-hasil penelitian mengenai asal usul ideologi perempuan-tempatnya-di-rumah di Barat, dan kemudian membahas bagaimana ideologi itu berkembang dan digunakan Indonesia. Ide kerumahtanggaan menyiratkan adanya suatu tatanan moral tertentu dan ide tertentu mengenai keluarga dan peranan kaum perempuan yang menempati tempat utama dalam visi pemerintah Order Baru mengenai masyarakat. Organisasi-organisasi kemasyarakatan yang dibangun kaum perempuan pada zaman kemerdekaan diserap oleh pemerintah Orde Baru, yang menggunakan program-program yang dijalankan organisasi-organisasi itu untuk memberikan pelayanan sosial berbiaya murah. Kisah dua perempuan, Bu Sae dan Bu Apik, menunjukkan bagaimana PKK dan tatanan moralitas dukungan negara digunakan dalam kehidupan sehari-hari masyarakat kampung. Ketika retorika pemerintah Orde Baru mengenai perempuan yang baik digunakan untuk landasan kegiatan-kegiatan kampung, maka berbagai ide direproduksi meski tidak sesuai dengan kehidupan sehari-hari warga kampung. Bersamaan dengan itu, masyarakat kampung juga direproduksi.
