In 1909 the Italian poet Filippo Tommaso Marinetti’s Founding Manifesto of Futurism was published on the front page of Le Figaro. Between 1909 and 1912 the Futurists published over thirty manifestos, celebrating speed and danger, glorifying war and technology, and advocating political and artistic revolution. This collection of essays aims to reassess the activities of the Italian Futurist movement from an international and interdisciplinary perspective, focusing on its activities and legacies in the field of poetry, painting, sculpture, theatre, cinema, advertising and politics. The essays offer exciting new readings in gender politics, aesthetics, historiography, intermediality and interdisciplinarity. They explore the works of major players of the movement as well as its lesser-known figures, and the often critical impact of Futurism on contemporary or later avant-garde movements such as Cubism, Dada and Vorticism. The publication will be of interest to scholars and students of European art, literature and cultural history, as well as to the informed general public.

"The art movement known as Futurism began in 1909 with the publication of the "Foundation and Manifesto and Futurism" by Filippo Tommaso Marinetti. Although the work of the Italian Futurist painters and sculptors is widely known and their contribution generally understood, Futurist developments in the performance arts, many of them created by the same painters and sculptors, are almost completely unknown in this country. This book attempts to survey these developments in a systematic way and to explain their importance. It covers Futurist work in the fields of drama, scenography, acting, dance, music, cinema, and radio, and it concerns itself both with actual performance and with performance theory, which was elucidated primarily in a series of manifestos.... Futurist Performance shows clearly how in its rejection of traditional forms, its relationship to the other arts, its non-naturalistic nature, concern with "audience involvement" and with the physicalization of the performance, Futurist theatre is especially significant in the light of recent developments in modern theatre. An invaluable appendix to this book contains Victoria Nes Kirby's translations from the Italian of thirteen manifestos and forty-eight playscripts. The author includes a selected chronology of Futurist performance for the period 1909-33, and the book contains fifty-six illustrations."--Back cover.

"Forty years after its original publication, Vladimir Markov's Russian Futurism: A History remains the classic in its field. Its learned account of Russian avant-garde poetics with respect to various forms and genres-poems, plays, artist's books, manifestos-is still the first I turn to when I want to review the critical information about Futurist manifestos or Khlebnikov's long poems and stories, or the collaborations of Goncharova and Kruchenykh. Meticulous and thorough, Markov's book, in this new edition, will be indispensable for students of the avant-garde." - Marjorie Perloff, Sadie D. Patek Professor Emerita of Humanities, Stanford University, Scholar-in-Residence, University of Southern California, author of The Futurist Moment. "It is wonderful to have this classic study of Russian Futurism and related movements back in print. Everyone who studies Russian modernism and the avant-garde has used and benefited from it. If any single book can be called 'indispensable' for the study of a period, it is Markov's, and now further generations can have it at hand. It is a book to give the lie to the Futurist patage 'read this book and destroy ' Keep forever " - John Malmstad, Samuel Hazzard Cross Professor of Slavic Languages and Literatures, Harvard University. "The publication of Russian Futurism: A History almost forty years ago was a major cultural event. That the book is still the most accurate and comprehensive English-language directory to the literature of the Russian avant-garde testifies to the richness and prescience of Vladimir Markov's scholarship." - John Bowlt, Professor of Slavic Languages and Literatures, University of Southern California; Director, Institute of Modern Russian Culture, Los Angeles.

Futurism written by Lawrence S. Rainey and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009 with Art categories.

In 1909, F.T. Marinetti published his incendiary Futurist Manifesto, proclaiming, “We stand on the last promontory of the centuries!!” and “There, on the earth, the earliest dawn!” Intent on delivering Italy from “its fetid cancer of professors, archaeologists, tour guides, and antiquarians,” the Futurists imagined that art, architecture, literature, and music would function like a machine, transforming the world rather than merely reflecting it. But within a decade, Futurism's utopian ambitions were being wedded to Fascist politics, an alliance that would tragically mar its reputation in the century to follow. Published to coincide with the 100th anniversary of the founding of Futurism, this is the most complete anthology of Futurist manifestos, poems, plays, and images ever to bepublished in English, spanning from 1909 to 1944. Now, amidst another era of unprecedented technological change and cultural crisis, is a pivotal moment to reevaluate Futurism and its haunting legacy for Western civilization.
