Chris Bray is the backgammon columnist for The Independent and has been playing and studying the game for over thirty years. In this anthology of his most recent Independent articles he traces the further development of many aspects of the game. The game continues to evolve and the last twenty years have seen a period of rapid development in the game. This is largely because of the advent of backgammon computer programs JellyFish, Snowie and, most recently, eXtreme Gammon. Consequently the modern expert player is light years ahead of his 1990s counterpart. The material in this book covers not only the development of backgammon theory but also looks at the history of the game including some of its more famous and colourful players. The timeless characters that make up Chris's menagerie continue to paint a vibrant picture of life in the high stakes chouette. Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Watson are also on hand to lend instruction and for this book Jeeves and Wooster have joined the party as well.

The past versus the future. Professor and sometimes-journalist Claire Agnew expects that debate in towns where wind farms come to call. Snowbound in a castle in Scotland, however, the contrast becomes starkly real. Standing on the battlements of the ancient Castle Glenhoolie, at the end of a fjord that has seen Viking raids and English garrisons, her commitment to progress is shaken as she imagines the historic landscape lined with the wind turbines she usually finds so sleek and sexy. Turbines aren’t the only attraction of Castle Glenhoolie, however. Broad-shouldered, long-legged Alec Kincaid is equally intriguing as he shares his local knowledge and insights into local wind farm politics. To Alec, Claire is refreshingly open, delighted in the village of Dunlorrie and the ancient buildings he disdains… until he realizes why she is asking so many questions. Feeling betrayed, he examines his feelings and his knowledge of Claire against his personal history. She, in turn, must come to grips with the demands the past make upon the present, as she considers the future of Castle Glenhoolie and her own future amidst The Winds of Glenhoolie.

Born into a privileged family of two attorneys, Asa was sent to the best schools including Horace Mann and Columbia University, but after a year at Columbia left school and his Park Avenue family home to make a living “hustling” chess and other games in the streets, parks and clubs of New York City. His character is portrayed in the book and film “Searching for Bobby Fischer”. Asa has made a living plying his skills in parts of eight decades, winning tournaments in every game he plays, his main game being Chess. Asa also teaches gaming theory, is the author of two Chess books and has been featured in movies and documentaries about Chess and in a feature article in the New York Times. A teenage friend of World Chess Champion Bobby Fischer, Asa achieved the international chess title of FIDE Master and was ranked number 21 in the US at the age of 21. He has continued to play and win tournaments since the 1950’s and is now one of the top senior chess players in the country. In this volume Asa recounts the amazing and often humorous stories of the characters, the events, and the venues of the New York gaming world, many of which no longer exist but are worth memorializing. Athens Riviera written by Assouline and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-05-28 with categories.

Overlooking the Aegean Sea, a charming string of coastal neighborhoods form the Athens Riviera, a serene escape from the constant activity in the city's center. A selection of high-end hotels lines the pristine stretch of beaches down to the southernmost point of the Attica Peninsula. The revamped Four Seasons Astir Palace, with a history of housing foreign dignitaries and film stars of the 1960s, is the most luxurious hotel in Athens, perhaps even in all of Greece. The night club, Island, is bringing back the glamour and excitement of the twentieth century bouzouki clubs reminiscent of names such as Melina Mercouri and Stavros Niarchos. Athens is experiencing a revival--in art, night life and design. For a metropolis constantly associated with the past, the modern strides in development and culture are sometimes overlooked in favor of the ruins and artifacts from antiquity. When in fact, the juxtaposition only enhances the beauty of both. Athens Riviera puts the old-world beside the new-world and a deeper understanding of this ancient capital emerges. With one foot in the past and one foot in the future; access to both the electricity of city life and the tranquility of a beach side resort, Athens cannot be defined in simple terms. One just has to experience it for themselves.
