An activity that originated in Western societies, backpacking has gained increasing popularity among Chinese millennials. In a spirit of the ‘search for self’, young Chinese backpackers have sought to display their pursuit of freedom, independence and responsibility within an increasingly individualised society through backpacking. This volume investigates contemporary young Chinese persons’ views on backpacking culture and backpackers. A group of Chinese backpackers are studied using interview and participant observation, and focus groups are conducted to study young professionals’ and university students’ attitudes towards backpacking. The results indicate a profound cultural change along with a degree of division. On the one hand, the backpackers often begin their journey due to a desire to pursue freedom, and use the pursuit as a process of reflexive awareness; on the other hand, the risks of pursuing a freewheeling lifestyle within an individualised society drive the majority of them to return home. The author concludes that this phenomenon is a kind of ‘staged individualism’, describing how Chinese millennials strike a balance between individual interests and wider social obligations. Students and scholars of sociology tourism, and youth culture will be interested in this volume.

ack Wolf is the world's biggest rock star, and he's just tried to kill himself. Refusing the 12-step programme to overcome his drug addiction, he instead tries to find the only girl he ever loved, Cath Pearson. But he has a problem. The last time he saw her was ten years previously on a beach near Bali. As he tracks down Cath through the backpackers she met on her travels, Jack learns about the lives of each of them. Each story brings him closer to Cath, but in the end he must confront a final question: did she survive that fateful year? Backpackers captures the beauty and excitement of South East Asia, and the drama of young people trying to stay sane so far away from home and everything they've ever known.

'Leaving the blinding sand for the cool shade of the trees, I walked carefully through the undergrowth to where Dave, using two twigs as chopsticks, was picking up a freshly severed human finger . . .'John's three-week holiday in India starts badly. After his girlfriend falls ill with a severe case of 'Delhi belly' and returns home alone, he finds himself looking at the sharp end of a knife in a train station latrine. But such is the stuff of backpacking and his life is saved - and turned upside down - by Rick, an enigmatic, Streetwise traveller, who persuades John to throw a future of mundane security to the wind and embark upon a series of increasingly bizarre journeys. On the island of Koh Pha-Ngan, John, Rick and Dave pose as millionaire aristocrats in a hedonistic Eden of beautiful girls, free drugs and wild beach parties. But all is not as it seems and eventually their new world comes crashing around their ears as they become embroiled in the politics of the Thai Mafia, stolen passports and arson attacks.Narrowly escaping with their lives (and a stolen yacht) they head for Bali, but tragedy strikes and the unexpected follows them through Indonesia, Australia and Hong Kong changing the direction of their lives once again . . .This is not travel for the faint-hearted: some backpackers never return.

People do go missing on their holiday. More than people think. Backpacking tales do not always end happily. Andrew and Kirsten are down on their luck in Indonesia during the late 1980’s. They are almost out of money and sharing dormitories with cockroaches and other wildlife. They are an unlikely couple; Andrew is a backpacker, seeking adventure and fun, and he’s besotted with Kirsten; Kirsten is a mystery, escaping her past and seeking a revenge that even she doesn’t quite understand. They run into Carlo, a smuggler, who is hunting his nemesis, Maurice, a killer with a grudge and a taste for backpackers. The journey into fear takes them across the backpacking trails of Asia from Indonesia to Nepal. This is a story of sex, drugs and rock’n roll, backpacker-style. Most backpackers enjoy an experience of a lifetime, untouched by anything more than Delhi Belly … but some don’t. Backpackers is a story that could happen to anybody. It’s a novel for any past, present and future backpackers … but not their parents!

In the period after their military service, Jewish Israeli youth customarily embark on a unique touristic practice: the backpacking trip. Combining sociological, anthropological, and psychological research—based on innovative fieldwork conducted with Israeli backpackers in Israel and abroad—this book depicts the complex relationship between the traveling youth and their society of origin. Via a perspective the editors term "outside-in," we learn how social and cultural tensions and tenets, identities, fantasies, and preoccupations are acted out within a symbolic, touristic space by scores of Israeli youth.
