The book "Bacterial Polysaccharides Steroidal Glycosides Antigens" by Geeta Karki is a comprehensive guide to the complex world of bacterial biochemistry, microbiology, and immunology. This book covers various aspects of bacterial polysaccharides, steroidal glycosides, and antigens, which are essential for understanding bacterial pathogenesis and immunity. The book begins by exploring the fundamental concepts of bacterial cell walls, lipopolysaccharides, and other critical components of the bacterial structure. It then delves into the immunogenicity of these components and the use of adjuvants in vaccines. Structural biology and serotyping, especially O-antigens, are also discussed in detail. The book also explores the pathogenesis of bacterial infections caused by Gram-negative bacteria and their capsules and lipoo ligosaccharides. The host-pathogen interactions and the immune response to these infections are explained in detail. The biosynthesis of bacterial polysaccharides, glycoconjugates, and carbohydrate-based vaccines is also covered in this book. The antigenic variation and bacterial virulence mechanisms that aid in immune evasion are also discussed. The book provides insight into the molecular biology of bacterial genetics and the evolution of bacteria. It also covers the use of glycomics, glycoengineering, and glycan arrays to develop glycosyltransferases, carbohydrate-protein conjugates, glycopeptides, and glycolipids for better understanding bacterial adhesion and mucosal immunity. Overall, this book is an essential reference for researchers, students, and professionals in the fields of microbiology, immunology, and biochemistry. It provides a comprehensive overview of bacterial polysaccharides, steroidal glycosides, and antigens and their roles in bacterial pathogenesis and immunity

As a reflection of the quantum leap that has been made in the study of glycostructures, the first edition of this book has been completely revised and updated. The editors give up-to-date information on glycostructures, their chemistry and chemical biology in the form of a completely comprehensive survey. Glycostructures play highly diverse and crucial roles in a myriad of organisms and important systems in biology, physiology, medicine, bioengineering and technology. Only in recent years have the tools been developed to partly understand the highly complex functions and the chemistry behind them. While many facts remain undiscovered, this MRW has been contributed to by a large number of the world’s leading researchers in the field.

This volume is the third in the series on the chemistry and physical chemistry of milk constituents. Volumes 1 and 2 dealt with the com mercially more important constituents, proteins and lipids, respectively. Although the constituents covered in this volume are of less direct commercial importance than the former two, they are nevertheless of major significance in the chemical, physical, technological, nutritional and physiological properties of milk. Lactose, the principal component of the milks of most species, is a rather unique sugar in many respects---it has been referred to as one of Nature's paradoxes. It is also the principal component in concentrated and dehydrated dairy products, many of the properties of which reflect those of lactose. The chemistry and principal properties of lactose have been thoroughly researched over the years and relatively little new information is available on these aspects; this new knowledge, as well as some of the older literature, is reviewed in Chapter 1.

Throughout the biological world, bacteria thrive predominantly in surface-attached, matrix-enclosed, multicellular communities or biofilms, as opposed to isolated planktonic cells. This choice of lifestyle is not trivial, as it involves major shifts in the use of genetic information and cellular energy, and has profound consequences for bacterial physiology and survival. Growth within a biofilm can thwart immune function and antibiotic therapy and thereby complicate the treatment of infectious diseases, especially chronic and foreign device-associated infections. Modern studies of many important biofilms have advanced well beyond the descriptive stage, and have begun to provide molecular details of the structural, biochemical, and genetic processes that drive biofilm formation and its dispersion. There is much diversity in the details of biofilm development among various species, but there are also commonalities. In most species, environmental and nutritional conditions greatly influence biofilm development. Similar kinds of adhesive molecules often promote biofilm formation in diverse species. Signaling and regulatory processes that drive biofilm development are often conserved, especially among related bacteria. Knowledge of such processes holds great promise for efforts to control biofilm growth and combat biofilm-associated infections. This volume focuses on the biology of biofilms that affect human disease, although it is by no means comprehensive. It opens with chapters that provide the reader with current perspectives on biofilm development, physiology, environmental, and regulatory effects, the role of quorum sensing, and resistance/phenotypic persistence to antimicrobial agents during biofilm growth.
