A funny and poignant account of life in Buenos Aires, by a young prize-winning writer. In 1993 Miranda France moved to South America, drawn to Buenos Aires as the intellectual hub of the continent, with its wealth of writers and its romantic, passionate and tragic history. She found that is was all these things, but it was also a terrible place to live. The inhabitants of Buenos Aires are famously unhappy. All over South America they are known for their arrogance, their fixation of Europe and their moodiness. Very soon, Miranda France encounters' bronca' - the simmering and barely controllable rage that is a staple feature of life in the Argentinian capital. She finds that 'bronca' has deep roots: the violence and racism of the first European settlers; the dictatorships, especially in the 1970s when so many 'disappeared'; even Evita Peron, for there was no rage to rival Evita's.

Buenos Aires, I imagined, was a city where the dancing never stopped, even in a crisis (in which Argentina always seemed to find itself). I fantasized about dancing tango in the arms of a sexy Latin lover at the end of the world with nothing to think about but my next tango step. I chose safer places to visit, and Argentina stayed on my bucket list. One fine day, I ran out of excuses. I owned a small finca in Alhaurín el Grande near Malaga, Spain and it needed painting. My good friend Brian said to me, ‘You buy the beers amigo, and I will help you paint your casita (house), and we can have some fun doing it.’ It was an offer too good to turn down as I knew Brian was a genius with a paintbrush. We had the best of times painting and bonding, drinking lots of beer and talking nonsense about life. On the second or third day, Brian threw a question at me: ‘What do you think about doing that you have never done before?’ ‘Umm,’ I replied, ‘let me think about that one. Pass me another beer.’ It didn't take me long to say that I always had a desire to visit South America and in particular, Argentina. Little did I know that answering Brian's question would change my life forever. Brian listened to my tales of why I wanted to go to Argentina, and then he knocked me over with a feather! He proceeded to tell me that he had just completed a documentary on the Argentinian footballer, Ossie Ardiles. Brian told me that Ossie had told him that if you want to see what real passion is, you need to see a football match in Argentina. Win or lose, hate it or love it, Ossie said, the passion in Argentinian football is the best and the most 'loco' in the world. Amazingly, about eight weeks after our painting break, we were on a plane bound for Argentina. The plan was to stay for around 6-7 days in Buenos Aires. 18 years later...I am still in Argentina. ******************************************************** BRILLIANT TIMES IN BUENOS AIRES. © DAVID CUMMINGS 2021 A LVXAB Publication. When she hears about the suicide of a Buenos Aires train driver who has left a note confessing to four mortal 'accidents' on the train tracks, journalist Veronica Rosenthal decides to investigate. For the police the case is closed (suicide is suicide), for Veronica it is the beginning of a journey that takes her into an unfamiliar world of grinding poverty, crime-infested neighborhoods, and train drivers on commuter lines haunted by the memory of bodies hit at speed by their locomotives in the middle of the night. Aided by a train driver with whom she has a tumultuous and reckless affair, a junkie in rehab and two street kids willing to risk everything for a can of Coke, she uncovers a group of men involved in betting on working-class youngsters convinced to play Russian roulette by standing in front of fast-coming trains to see who endures the longest.

Tango Nuevo written by Carolyn Merritt and has been published by University Press of Florida this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-11-11 with Performing Arts categories.

The Argentine tango is one of the world’s best-known partner dances. Though tango is much admired and discussed, very little has been written on its ongoing evolution. In this innovative work, Carolyn Merritt surveys tango history while focusing on the most recent iteration of the dance, tango Nuevo, and the práctica scene that has exploded in Buenos Aires since the early 2000s. After starting with an overview of tango, Merritt leads readers on a great adventure through the traditional dance halls and the less formal prácticas of Buenos Aires to tango communities on both coasts of the United States. Along the way, Merritt’s personal observations show the dance’s emotional depth and the challenges dancers face in tango venues old and new. Her investigation also demonstrates how innovation, globalization, and fusion, which many associate with nuevo, have always been at work in tango. Combining sensuous prose, provocative images, and often heartbreaking stories, this book takes an unflinching look at the complex motivations driving the pursuit to master this intricate dance. Throughout, Merritt questions the "newness" of Nuevo through portraits of machismo, violence, and elitism in contemporary tango. The result is a volume that highlights the tensions between preservation and evolution of this--or any--cultural art form. Members of the global tango community as well as students of dance, folklore, anthropology, and the social sciences will embrace this book. For those who are devoted to Argentine tango as dance, this book will be indispensable to understanding its most recent transformations.
