Bat Masterson knew better than most of his contemporaries that the majority of what was written about the old west was little more than rattlesnake piss and bat guano. He said, ""nerve was the quality that marked the great gunfighters."" Perhaps more telling is what Masterson suggested was the ""secret sauce"" that made the big-name gunfighters so fast. ""We used to file the notch of the hammer till the trigger would pull 'sweet' which is another way of saying that the blame gun would pretty near go off if you looked at it."" But, ""the real gunfighters did not file the notches off."" They carried one gun in their hip-holster, and another ""swung under the armpit."" It let them ""draw on an adversary while he was waiting for the familiar motion toward the hip."" Here are the real stories of 23 outlaws, gunfighters, and lawmen. The truth may surprise you.

This book is a literary exploration of Mark Twain's writings on crime in the American West and its intersection with morality, gender and justice. Writing from his office at the Enterprise newspaper in the Nevada Territory, Twain employed a distinct style of crime writing--one that sensationalized facts and included Twain's personal philosophies and observations. Covering Twain's journalism, fictional works and his own personal letters, this book contextualizes the writer's coverage of crime through his anxieties about westward expansion and the promise of a utopian West. Twain's observations on the West often reflected common perceptions of the day, positioning him as a "voice of the people" on issues like crime, punishment and gender.

In the Old West, upright lawmen were scarce. Often, the men who were bound to keep the peace were just as corrupt as the men they pursued. These dishonest deputies chose their professions based on convenience rather than conviction, and the most revered were often the wiliest. These men held grudges, ruled with violence, and instilled fear in all who crossed their paths. Offered here is an untainted perspective of these outlaws that discerns fact from myth. Legends such as Wyatt Earp and renegade lawman Dirty Dave Rudabaugh are presented as real men with quirks and weaknesses. The authors deconstruct not only the Dalton's last stand in Coffeyville, Kansas, and the gunfight at the OK Corral-among other famous heists-but also the triumphs and flaws of their organizers. The Old West's former outlaws turned good, former lawmen gone bad, and honorable citizens who moonlighted as robbers and rustlers are presented in these pages. ABOUT THE AUTHORS Laurence J.
