Seminar paper from the year 2012 in the subject Politics - Region: Near East, Near Orient, grade: 2,0, University of Tubingen (Institut für Politikwissenschaft), course: Current Issues in the Mediterranean: Revolutions in the Arab World, language: English, abstract: Bahrain is one of the countries of the so-called "Arab Spring" but it differs from other revolutionary states: First of all, it is the only one of the six Gulf monarchies in which the existing ruling system was seriously threatened by the demonstrations. Also, the protests as such have a special significance, not only because with up to a hundred thousand people taking it to the streets they were remarkably bigger than the protests in other monarchies, but also because compared to the population, these were probably the biggest demonstrations in the Arab world. Nevertheless, the protests have (up until now) failed.

After the oil discoveries of the early 1930s, Bahrain rapidly became an oil exporting country with a relatively high income per capita. More recently Bahrain has succeeded in diversifying its oil dominated economy by developing regional banking and other services, and a variety of light and heavy industries. Various circumstances have combined to make Bahrain a leader among the Arab Gulf States in the transformation of traditional Arabic tribal societies into modern social and economic structures. This book, first published in 1985, in exploring the past, present and possible futures of Bahrain and the Gulf, attempts to describe the nature of this transformation. It estimates to what extent Bahrain has merely an outward appearance of modernity, and explores the conflicts between the compelling power of modern values and the pervasive traditional religions. Bahrain is not typical of the Arab countries of the Gulf; it may, however, serve as a gauge of their current position and likely future. It will therefore be valuable to those interested in gaining more insight into the history and politics of the Middle East during this period of rapid change.

A survey of the historical, political, and sociological contexts of antisemitism in more than 50 countries. Antisemitism: A Reference Handbook is the first reference work to present a global survey of antisemitism that goes beyond its history to reveal the roots and nature of antisemitism. Exploring how antisemitism has manifested itself in various countries from pre-Christian times to today's ongoing Palestinian Intifada, which has caused severe reactions in Arab and Muslim communities all over the world, this unique work traces the history of the hatred of Jews worldwide. Approximately 20 biographical sketches profile advocates of antisemitism such as William Marr, who coined the term "antisemitism," and opponents of antisemitism such as St. Anselm and Martin Luther King. In this serious yet accessible volume, students, scholars, government officials, and diplomats will discover the answers to such puzzling questions as "What is antisemitism?" and "How does antisemitism relate to racism and to group prejudice in general?"

An Introduction To Religion And Politics written by Jonathan Fox and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-05-07 with Political Science categories.

An Introduction to Religion and Politics offers a comprehensive overview of the many theories of religion and politics, and provides students with an accessible but in-depth account of the most significant debates, issues and methodologies. Fox examines the ways in which religion influences politics, analyses the current key issues and provides a state of the art account of religion and politics, highlighting the diversity in state religion policies around the world. Topics covered include: Secularism and secularization Religious identity Religious worldviews, beliefs, doctrines and theologies Religious legitimacy Religious institutions and mobilization Rational and functional religion Religious fundamentalism Conflict, violence and terror This work combines theoretical analysis with data on the religion policies of 177 governments, showing that while most of the world's government support religion and many restrict it; true neutrality on the issue of religion is extremely rare. Religion is becoming an inescapable issue in politics. This work will be essential reading for all students of religion and politics, and will also be of great interest to those studying related subjects such as comparative politics, international relations and war and conflict studies.

This book explores the different concepts of 'a university' and the way they shape practice in Muslim contexts, with a particular focus on the Islamic republic of Pakistan. Higher education in Muslim contexts is often criticised for being incapable either of contributing to the socio-cultural and civilisational developments of society or of doing research and producing knowledge of a high standard. While the international organisations accuse universities of not helping the societies to become knowledge based and to compete at the global level, some Muslim scholars call for the creation of 'authentic Islamic' educational structures that would, as they think, solve the problems of higher education.
