Work provides daily meaning as well as daily bread, according to Studs Terkel. Yet work is not always a place where one feels satisfied. In order to attract and retain qualified employees in the up-coming tight labor market, companies will have to recognize that people are their most important asset. Using original research, this book describes what employees want and need from their working environment to maximize their satisfaction and their performance. It assists the reader to deal with employees as unique individuals whose personal needs for self-actualization can be integrated with organizational performance needs. The book begins with a summary of the conventional wisdom on job satisfaction and performance and a description of what constitutes good work. Bruce and Blackburn introduce their readers to the workplace complexities created by cultural diversity, mature workers, and women employees. They explain the effect of culture on behavior and why the traditional means to foster job satisfaction and performance are necessary but insufficient for managing diversity. They give advice on how to meet the challenges presented by changing environmental and technological trends. They teach how to manage when family demands on both men and women spill over onto the organization, and they describe the emerging conviction that, for many, those in a work setting are family for one another. They provide specific instructions for conducting and utilizing training programs. In the belief that people accept what they help to create, they explain the utility of participation at different organizational levels and some different approaches to participative planning and decision making, including Total Quality Management. They report on interviews with employees from a cross-section of jobs in different organizations to assist the reader to understand how employees perceive the reality of work; and they provide appendices containing training outlines, guidelines for preventing and addressing sexual harassment complaints, and forms to utilize in organizing a participative planning process. Breir book is an important resource for managers, executives, consultants, and students who seek to understand how the changing nature of the workforce is affecting job satisfaction and performance; and who want to act on behalf of their organization and their employees. It is useful for managers in the private sector, as well as those who work for government and not-for-profit organizations.

Understanding Work/Life BalanceIn today's fast-paced and demanding world, achieving a healthy work/life balance has become increasingly important. In this subchapter, we will delve into the significance of maintaining a harmonious equilibrium between our personal and professional lives. By understanding the importance of work/life balance, employees can lead more fulfilling lives while excelling in their careers. Work/life balance refers to the delicate juggling act of allocating time and energy between work-related responsibilities and personal commitments. It encompasses various aspects such as managing time effectively, prioritizing self-care, and nurturing personal relationships. Achieving a healthy work/life balance is crucial as it directly impacts our physical and mental well-being, job satisfaction, and overall happiness. One of the primary reasons why work/life balance is essential is its positive impact on our health. A well-balanced life allows for sufficient rest, exercise, and recreation, which are vital for maintaining good physical health. By prioritizing personal time and engaging in activities that rejuvenate our mind and body, we can reduce stress levels and prevent burnout. Moreover, a healthy work/life balance promotes better mental health, leading to increased productivity and creativity in the workplace. Beyond health, work/life balance significantly influences job satisfaction. When individuals are able to allocate time for their personal interests and passions, they feel more fulfilled and motivated in their professional lives. Engaging in activities outside of work not only provides a sense of purpose but also enhances overall job performance. A well-rounded employee who can strike a balance between work and personal life brings fresh perspectives and innovative ideas to the table. Furthermore, work/life balance plays a pivotal role in nurturing personal relationships. By dedicating quality time to family, friends, and oneself, employees can foster stronger bonds and create lasting memories. Maintaining these connections offers emotional support, reduces feelings of isolation, and contributes to a sense of belonging. A healthy work/life balance allows individuals to be present and engaged in their relationships, leading to greater happiness and fulfillment

Master's Thesis from the year 2012 in the subject Leadership and Human Resources - Miscellaneous, grade: 4.00, Obafemi Awolowo University (Faculty of Administration), course: Business Administration, language: English, abstract: This study identified existing organizational practices and policies helping to balance work and life roles among workers and examined the factors that inhibit or enhance their adoption by workers in South-Western Nigeria. It also investigated the relationship between work-life balance and performance of workers, with a view to gaining an understanding of the range of ways by which workers in Nigeria achieve work-life balance. The study was conducted in six purposively selected private universities across the six states of South-western Nigeria, using primary and secondary data. A sample size of 540 was derived from a total of 702 using stratified sampling technique. Questionnaires were administered to all the respondents to ferret information on work-life balance and performance of workers. Secondary data from institutional records were used to augment information gathered through the questionnaire. Data collected were analyzed using frequency cross-tabulation, correlation and regression analysis. Organizational policies such as the provision of crèche, staff school, staff club, recreational centres, staff canteen and annual family get together were identified as locally adopted practices by staff. The study found that the existence of these organizational policies and practices is positively correlated with available variation of such policies and practices (r=0.859; p>0.01), use or adoption of such policies and practices (r=0.898; p>0.01) and the perception of a balanced work and life interaction (r=0.184; p>0.01). Personal perception of a balanced work-life is also positively and significantly correlated with all the other factors; availability of variations (r=0.144; p>0.01) and adoption of these policies and practices (r=0.166; p>0.01). A fairly low Durbin-Watson score of 1.366 indicates that the availability of any other Work-Life balancing factor, such as flexible working, could dramatically affect the outcome of the study. It also confirmed the hypothesis that there is no relationship between adoption of work-life balance policies or practices and performance. Summarily, there is the need for the expansion of work-life balancing practices to include such practices as flexible working, tele-working, job-sharing, paternity leave, multiple tranches maternity leave and the simpler breast feeding break and that undergraduate HRM curriculum should include work-life balancing concepts to expand the scope of enquiries into their features and evolutions.

Creating an organization where employees can achieve a good balance between work and family life is a growing concern for employees and organisations. Indeed, employer responsiveness in developing and implementing policies and programs that achieve work-family balance is becoming a key attribute distinguishing family-friendly organizations. Although much of the research attention to date has focused on demonstrating the negative effects of work-family conflict on individual well-being (e.g. increased job satisfaction, reduced stress) and organizational performance (e.g. reduced turnover), researchers have now begun to uncover the positive effects (facilitation) of work on family and vice versa. Some forward thinking organizations have identified the potential of work-family balance for creating competitive advantage and have put in place family-friendly policies with the intent of improving employee satisfaction, retention and organizational performance. The goal of this Special Issue is to bring together organizational innovations and best practices for achieving work-family balance including proven strategic, human resource, and change management strategies for achieving work-family balance in organizations.

Based on a thorough review of the research on work-life balance, Sirgy and Lee identify a set of personal interventions that selected employees commonly use to increase their work-life balance and life satisfaction. Personal interventions of work-life balance involve five behavior-based strategies and four cognition-based strategies. The behavior-based strategies are engaging in multiple roles and domains, increasing role enrichment, engaging in behavior-based compensation, managing role conflict, and creating role balance. The cognition-based strategies are segmenting roles and domains, integrating roles and domains, engaging in value-based compensation, and applying whole-life perspective in decision-making. This volume provides HR managers and HR consultants with pedagogical material designed to help them develop in-house workshops, seminars, and curricula for their employees to improve their work-life balance by using the personal interventions described in the book.

In this era of frequent corporate restructuring and rapid technological change, successful companies must have employees who are open to innovation and to changing roles, and are able to work together productively. Research shows that employees most likely to be adaptable, cooperative, and productive are those who are satisfied with their jobs. Therefore, it is essential that leaders of American business understand how to enhance job satisfaction within their organizations. In Job Satisfaction, top academic researchers in the field share state-of-the-art information on creating job satisfaction, its resulting benefits, and the risks of having too many employees who are dissatisfied with their jobs. As they show, job satisfaction is also an extremely useful predictor for management. An employee's level of job satisfaction is the single most important piece of data a manager or organizational psychologist can have to predict an employee's rate of absenteeism, decision to resign or retire, desire for union representation, or level of psychological withdrawal. Before they can enhance job satisfaction, managers must understand its components. Research demonstrates that an employee's level of satisfaction is based not only on events in the present and past, but also on his perceptions of the future. Foreseeing future opportunities for advancement, for increased pay, for participation in decision-making, or for networking lead to a high level of job satisfaction. In fact, the authors reveal, perceiving future opportunity can actually be more motivating than actually receiving a raise, getting promoted, or being given additional responsibilities. Job Satisfaction dispels the notion that jobstress necessarily leads to dissatisfaction, and shows how an organization should focus on increasing satisfaction rather than just reducing stress. It is especially important for managers to stimulate job satisfaction by improving their employees' sense of achievement through making tasks and their objectives clear, as well as giving feedback. Academics and managers alike will find Job Satisfaction a source of new and useful information for understanding and enhancing satisfaction on the job.
