Balkan Epic written by Philip Vilas Bohlman and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012 with Music categories.

Since antiquity the epic has been the defining poetic and musical genre of southeastern Europe. Performed by specialist singers, usually accompanying themselves on stringed instruments, Balkan epics unfold narratively and with single lines, often over the course of hours or even days, requiring great feats of memory and creativity. Stories and histories converge in the Balkan epic, defining moments of conflict between empires and religions in the Middle Ages and nation-states in the present. Balkan epics are both classic works of literature and song in the southeastern European tradition and a form of political commentary and cultural expression in the modern Balkans. In Balkan Epic: Song, History, Modernity, editors Philip V. Bohlman and Nada Petković have compiled essays that examine epics across the Balkan region and in the major languages of the different nations. Individual authors explore the epics of Albania, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Croatia, Montenegro, Romania, and Serbia. Emphasizing the ways epics can symbolize the Balkans as a whole, they consider the contributions of individuals over the course of the historical longue duree and in the last decade. On the accompanying CD of recordings some never heard before these stories and histories come to life. Themes of conflict and reconciliation form a counterpoint, revealing the ways in which the epic sheds light on the aesthetic and political complexities of southeastern Europe today. Balkan Epic brings together diverse perspectives on the many repertories of epic song in southeastern Europe. Students and scholars in the fields of music, anthropology, history, linguistics, Slavic languages, media studies, and political science will benefit from the interdisciplinary thrust of the collected essays."

"Since the early 1970s, Marina Abramovic (b. 1946) has pioneered the use of performance as a visual art form, exploring her physical and emotional limits in some of the most iconic works in contemporary art. Her body is her primary subject and medium, and she has withstood pain, exhaustion, and danger in her ongoing quest for emotional and spiritual transformation. As a vital member of the generation of pioneering performance artists that includes Bruce Nauman, Vito Acconci, and Chris Burden, Abramovic created some of the most historic early performance pieces. Of these artists, she is the only one still making important durational works." "Abramovic features prominently in virtually every survey published on performance art, and her works are held in the permanent collections of many of the world's top museums, including the Musee Nationale d'Art Moderne, Centre Pompidou, Paris; the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam; and the Museum of Modern Art, New York. In November 2005 at New York's Guggenheim Museum, Abramovic staged a landmark weeklong series of performances entitled Seven Easy Pieces. Her twelve-day 'living installation', The House with the Ocean View was on numerous critics' lists as the best exhibition of 2002, and she was awarded the Golden Lion at the 1997 Venice Biennale for her video installation/performance Balkan Baroque."--BOOK JACKET.

Epic Singers And Oral Tradition written by Albert Bates Lord and has been published by Cornell University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-08-06 with Literary Criticism categories.

Albert Bates Lord here offers an unparalleled overview of the nature of oral-traditional epic songs and the practices of the singers who composed them. Shaped by the conviction that theory should be based on what singers actually do, and have done in times past, the essays collected here span half a century of Lord's research on the oral tradition from Homer to the twentieth century. Drawing on his extensive fieldwork in living oral traditions and on the theoretical writings of Milman Parry, Lord concentrates on the singers and their art as manifested in texts of performance. In thirteen essays, some previously unpublished and all of them revised for book publication, he explores questions of composition, transmittal, and interpretation and raises important comparative issues. Individual chapters discuss aspects of the Homeric poems, South Slavic oral-traditional epics, the songs of Avdo Metedovic, Beowulf and Anglo-Saxon poetry, the medieval Greek Digenis Akritas and other medieval epics, central Asiatic and Balkan epics, the Finnish Kalevala, and the Bulgarian oral epic. The work of one of the most respected scholars of his generation, Epic Singers and Oral Tradition will be an invaluable resource for scholars and students of myth and folklore, classicists, medievalists, Slavists, comparatists, literary theorists, and anthropologists.

The Epics of Gilgamesh, Homer, Vergil, Shahnameh, are sources of our knowledge of religious beliefs. This epic is a welcome introduction to the spiritual world of the Albanians as they fought the crusades. The "Songs of the Frontier Warrior is the first English-language translation ever made of Albanian epic verse. As the product of a little-known culture and a difficult, rarely studied language, the Albanian epic has tended to remain in the shadow of the Serbo-Croatian, or more properly, Bosnian epic, with which it has undeniable affinities. This translation may thus be regarded as an initial attempt to rectify the imbalance and to give scholars and the reading public in general an opportunity to delve into the exotic world of the northern Albanian tribes. The present bilingual edition offers a broad selection of the best known songs. Also included are an introduction, a glossaries of terms and sources, and a selective bibliography.

Approaches To The Anglo And American Female Epic 1621 1982 written by Bernard Schweizer and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-02-08 with Literary Criticism categories.

Epic has long been regarded as the exclusive domain of the male literary genius and as an incarnation of patriarchal values. This provocative collection of essays challenges such a hegemonic stereotype by demonstrating the ways in which women writers have successfully adapted the masculine epic tradition to suit their own aesthetic needs and to express their own heroic literary, social, and historical visions. Bringing the female epic out of the shadows, the contributors rethink generic boundaries to illuminate this heretofore hidden literary practice. The essays range from Mary Tighe to Rebecca West from Elizabeth Barrett Browning to Gwendolyn Brooks, and from Frances Burney to Virginia Woolf. Bernard Schweizer's introduction, titled 'Muses with Pens,' connects the trajectory of ideas and influences in the individual essays to demonstrate how each participates in reclaiming for women writers a place in the development of a female epic tradition. The volume will be an invaluable resource for scholars working on issues related to genre, canon formation, and the evolution of female literary authority.
