The tumultuous history of the Balkans has been subject to a plethora of conflicting interpretations, both local and external. In an attempt to help overcome the stereotypes that still pervade Balkan history, Battling over the Balkans concentrates on a set of five principal controversies from the precommunist period with which the region’s history and historiography must contend: the pre-1914 Ottoman and Eastern Christian Orthodox legacies; the post-1918 struggles for state-building; the range of European economic and cultural influences across the interwar period, as opposed to diplomatic or political intervention; the role of violence and paramilitary forces in challenging the interwar political regimes in the region; and the fate of ethnic minorities into and after World War II, particularly Jews, Muslims and Roma. In an attempt to give a voice to eminent local authors, the chapters provide samples of new regional scholarship exploring these contested issues—most of them translated into English for the first time—and are prefaced with historiographical overviews addressing the state of the debate on these specific controversies. These translations help bridge the language barriers that often separate scholarly traditions within Southeast Europe, as well as scholars in Southeast Europe and English-speaking academia. This volume will enable readers to identify common patterns and influences that characterize the writing of history in the region, and will stimulate new transnational and comparative approaches to the history of the Balkans.

This book explores the historial role of the Balkan Wars. In Eastern Europe, the two Balkan Wars of 1912/13 had greater importance than the First World War for the construction of nations and states. This volume shows how these “short” wars profoundly changed the sociopolitical situation in the Balkans, with consequences that are still felt today. More than one hundred years later, the successors of the belligerent states in Southeastern Europe memorialize the wars as heroic highlights of their respective pasts. Furthermore, the metaphor that the Balkans were Europe’s “powder keg”, perpetuated at the beginning of the twentieth century in the face of these wars, was reactivated in both the West and the East up through the Yugoslav wars of the 1990s. It is not a study of Serbian politics, but simply a collection of articles published in La Serbie in Geneva (Switzerland) between 1916 and 1919. Although limited, the collection gives full information about the chief points of Serbian policy and the ideal which has guided us in our national struggle. We think that it might be interesting for British readers to obtain for once an authentic explanation of Serbia's policy - as Serbian publicists and politicians conceive it. The diversity of collaborators does not rob the book of its character of an organic whole, which is another proof of the unity and straightforwardness of our policy. One essential feature characterizes indeed the whole attitude of the Serbian people, before and during the world conflict, and this is their clear vision of the German peril and the firm and fixed determination of Serbia to resist it at all costs, and to make the greatest sacrifices in defence of her political and economic independence. Europe did not understand Serbia's policy, and when, on certain occasions, she did display more comprehension of our affairs, it was done with ill grace and evident reluctance.
