Should be given in democratic language and minus all customary poetic conceit. That such language is the best, in poetry as well as in prose, which is drawn from the rank and file of society, namely, such as is used hourly to communicate the ordin ary facts of daily life is evident. The character of a nation displayed through its acts we commonly call its history; and When manifested by its dramas, songs, etc., written down in books, it makes its literature. Thus literature arid history go hand in hand. The former may be styled the life of a na tion; the latter its phenomena. As the youthful'mind is prone to find more interest in the deeds than in the thoughts of men, so nations, in the ex 'pression of their thoughts first assume the actual, real or historic form. Hence the first records of a nation are trans mitted in the epic style, they are songs and praises of historic deeds. The ex pression of reality; however, is soon metamorphosed into ideality, and the effects are often highly picturesque and appeal strongly to the imagination. From time immemorial all human beings of Whatever clime or tongue, the rude and uncultured tribes, as well as the most civilized nations, have records of their struggles and Victories. Love is the morning glow of every heart; but in what human career have not. Some first ecstasies of bliss. Been broken by the storm, whose cruel breath destroys fond illusions, and blasts the sacred shrine with a bolt of lightning? First love is just such a prelude; soon broken and made a memory for the heart to feed on in the days and years of silvery hair. But there is another greater, finer piece of music, a rapturous overture of the heart, that is played on and on all through the day and far into the night, in tempest and sun shine, in life and in death, echoing in the songs of millions of mothers, until, when God wills it, there are left only the wistful chords dying away in the distance like some faint swan-song.
