Excerpt from Ballads of the English Reformation Of the five ballads contained in the following pages, those of John Brown's martyrdom and Hugh Latimer are the only ones in which I have taken leave to draw upon my imagination. The others are simply versified history. And in the case of the two where I have employed a certain amount of fiction, I have followed, nevertheless, the facts of history so far as they go, as the, reader may see by referring to the Notes. I would bespeak an indulgent criticism for these verses, on the plea that a writer of ballads is not bound to achieve a high poetic flight. I conceive that the cadence of metre will of itself do something to heighten the effect of a striking narrative; and that, for this reason alone, it is worth while to versify a tale which one would have to abide in the memory and heart of the reader. Excerpt from The English Reformation: How It Came About, and Why We Should Uphold It IT is one of the most painful duties for a member of any branch of the Christian Church to have to blame or condemn any other section, even where there is the greatest reason for doing so. Excerpt from The English Reformation of the Sixteenth Century: With Chapters on Monastic England, and the Wycliffite Reformation Others there were - indeed, the vast majority of Englishmen - Who felt that the supremacy claimed by the Bishop of Rome in all the ecclesiastical affairs of the English nation was injurious to the interests of the State. Again and again had such claims been resisted, and the question raised, Who should rule, the king or the pope In the interests of national freedom the answer was given; and in both spiritual and national strength England has grown stronger and greater by the answer she gave. Excerpt from The History of the Reformation of the Church of England, Vol. 4 The earliest historian of the English Reformation appears to have been Foxe. The venerable martyrologist, however, has rather presented us with a series of valuable documents and important statements, than with a continuous narrative. Within a few years after the appearance of his work, Sanders, a plotting English Romanist, published a copious treatise in defence of the papal supremacy, containing numerous aspersions upon those who had aided in emancipating England from that usurpation. Excerpt from Lollardy and the Reformation in England, Vol. 1: An Historical Survey Moreover, I have not bound myself to the form of a progressive historical narrative. I have called the work an historical survey, not a history; for I have felt it necessary at times to glance backwards and forwards, and even to repeat myself to some extent. Whether I could have got all I had to say otherwise into a more artistic form, I am not altogether sure. The significance of great movements seems to require a good deal of restatement to do it justice; and a condensed general survey ought, I think, to assist the understanding of a detailed account. Yet perhaps the conditions under which I have been compelled to work are answerable to some extent for repetitions which might have been avoided. Excerpt from The Secret of Progress Buckle1 regarded it as clear that militarism and high intellectual development were not compatible: till recently, many people were prepared to believe that warfare was alien to the interest of civilised peoples and could only occur among half civilised or backward races. But this war has shown that these hopes were vain, and that the last result of civilisation was not to render war impossible, but to give the means of carrying it out on a vastly extended scale. The increase of knowledge and of power over nature, and the sense of the benefits of intercourse and inter-communication have not sufficed to give us any immunity from war.
