Excerpt from History of the Reformation of the Church of England, Vol. 1 of 4 Who would suppose, for instance, that while Burnet was yet alive, he had been admonished of an error into which he had fallen, in speaking of the Council of Trullo, (or in T ratio as it should rather be) as a council holden in the fifth century, whereas it took place, in reality, not till the very end of the seventh, or beginning of the eighth century? Still however the original mistake has been repeated again and again in the text, in various editions, and the correction reserved for the addenda or appendix at the very end of the work. In the present edition the text will be found to be corrected as it should be, and the correction sent to the author, omitted. Excerpt from History of the Reformation in Europe, Vol. 4: In the Time of Calvin; England, Geneva, France, Germany, and Italy The most important fact of that epoch in Great Britain is the act by which the English Church re sumed its independence. It was attended by a pecu liar circumstance. When Henry VIII. Emancipated his people from the papal supremacy, he proclaimed himself head of the Church. And hence, of all Pro testant countries, England is the one in which Church and State are most closely united. The legislators of the Anglican Church understood afterwards the danger presented by this union, and consequently declared, in the Thirty-seventh Article (of the Civil Magistrates), that, 'where they attributed to the King's Majesty the chief government, they gave not to their prmces the ministering of God's Word.' This did not mean that the king should' not preach such an idea did not occur to any one; but that the civil power should not take upon itself to determine the doctrines of the divine Word. Excerpt from The History of the Reformation of the Church of England, Vol. 7 The publication of the History of the Reformation seems to have been first suggested to its author by the appearance of the new French translation of Sanders' book de origine ac progressu Schismatis Anglicani. This work had been printed at Cologne in 1585, and had passed through several editions, and been translated into French in 1587. Upon the publication of the new translation by Maucroix at Paris in 1676, the author was diverted from the proposal made to him by Sir William Jones to undertake the history of England, and induced to write this History in answer to Sanders' work, which, he says, was at that time much cried up in France. At the time when he commenced his work he had, as he remarks in his Reflections on Atterbury, p. 25, had no sort of practice in our records, but took no small pains and charge for three years together in searching for materials, and submitted himself to the direction and advice of Bishop Stillingfleet, Sir John Marsham, and Mr. Petyt. He was at first unable to procure admittance into Sir John Cotton's library. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The History of the Reformation of the Church of England, Vol. 3 This Work, which is designed to finish the History of our Reformation, seems reserved to be laid at your Majesty's feet; who, we trust, is designed by God to complete the Reformation itself. To rectify what may be yet amiss, and to supply what is defective among us; to oblige us to live and to labour more suitably to our profession; to unite us more firmly among ourselves; to bury, and for ever to extinguish, the fears of our relapsing again into popery; and to establish a confidence and correspondence with the protestant and reformed churches abroad. The eminent moderation of the most serene house from which your Majesty is descended, gives us auspicious hopes, that as God has now raised your Majesty, with signal characters of an amazing Providence, to be the head and the chief strength of the Reformation; so your Majesty will, by a wise and noble conduct, form all these churches into one body; so that, though they cannot agree to the same opinions and rituals with us in all points, yet they may join in one happy confederacy, for the support of the whole, and of every particular branch of that sacred union. Excerpt from The History of the Reformation of the Church of England, Vol. 1 of 2 The Lord Herbert judged it unworthy of him to tri e as others had done, and therefore made a more narrow search into records and original papers than all that had gone before him and with great fidelity and industry has given us the History of King Henry the Eighth. But in the transactions that concern religion, he dwells not so long as the matter required, leaving those to men of another profession, and judging it perhaps not so proper for one of his condition to pursue a full and accurate deduction of those matters.
