Operator theory is a diverse area of mathematics which derives its impetus and motivation from several sources. It began with the study of integral equations and now includes the study of operators and collections of operators arising in various branches of physics and mechanics. The intention of this book is to discuss certain advanced topics in operator theory and to provide the necessary background for them assuming only the standard senior-first year graduate courses in general topology, measure theory, and algebra. At the end of each chapter there are source notes which suggest additional reading along with giving some comments on who proved what and when. In addition, following each chapter is a large number of problems of varying difficulty. This new edition will appeal to a new generation of students seeking an introduction to operator theory.

These notes are a corrected version of the lecture notes which were distributed to participants at a regional conference held at the University of Georgia on June 12-16, 1972. The theme of the lectures was the use of techniques drawn from the theory of Banach algebras to study Toeplitz operators. An attempt was made at unifying diverse results, and point of view and direction were stressed rather than completeness. In particular, many recent results and problems were discussed.

Recent developments in diverse areas of mathematics suggest the study of a certain class of extensions of C*-algebras. Here, Ronald Douglas uses methods from homological algebra to study this collection of extensions. He first shows that equivalence classes of the extensions of the compact metrizable space X form an abelian group Ext (X). Second, he shows that the correspondence X ⃗ Ext (X) defines a homotopy invariant covariant functor which can then be used to define a generalized homology theory. Establishing the periodicity of order two, the author shows, following Atiyah, that a concrete realization of K-homology is obtained.

his volume contains the proceedings of the AMS Special Session Operator Algebras and Their Applications: A Tribute to Richard V. Kadison, held from January 10–11, 2015, in San Antonio, Texas. Richard V. Kadison has been a towering figure in the study of operator algebras for more than 65 years. His research and leadership in the field have been fundamental in the development of the subject, and his influence continues to be felt though his work and the work of his many students, collaborators, and mentees. Among the topics addressed in this volume are the Kadison-Kaplanksy conjecture, classification of C∗-algebras, connections between operator spaces and parabolic induction, spectral flow, C∗-algebra actions, von Neumann algebras, and applications to mathematical physics.

Index Theory is one of the most exciting and consequential accomplishments of 20th-century mathematics. This book contemplates the four great mathematicians who developed index theory - Sir Michael Atiyah, Raoul Bott, Friedrich Hirzebruch, and I M Singer. It presents a variety of material of a personal as well as mathematical nature. This second edition of Founders of Index Theory remembers the late and much beloved Raoul Bott - in the affectionate words of those three men, as well as family members and long-time friends and colleagues. What emerges is the portrait of a compelling mathematical mind informed by a warm and magnetic personality that was both a joy and inspiration to those who knew him. This volume includes a generous collection of color and black-and-white photographs - many rarely seen - of the four principal figures together with their family, friends, and colleagues. The Founders of Index Theory, Second Edition is a valuable portrayal of four men who transformed mathematics in a profound manner, and who belong to a class of researchers whose interest and influence transcend the conventional boundaries of mathematical fields.
