Breaking Out Of Beginner S Spanish written by Joseph J. Keenan and has been published by University of Texas Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-01-20 with Foreign Language Study categories.

Many language books are boring—this one is not. Written by a native English speaker who learned Spanish the hard way—by trying to talk to Spanish-speaking people—it offers English speakers who have a basic knowledge of Spanish hundreds of tips for using the language more fluently and colloquially, with fewer obvious “gringo” errors. Writing with humor, common sense, and a minimum of jargon, Joseph J. Keenan covers everything from pronunciation, verb usage, and common grammatical mistakes to the subtleties of addressing other people, “trickster” words that look alike in both languages, inadvertent obscenities, and intentional swearing. He guides readers through the set phrases and idiomatic expressions that pepper the native speaker’s conversation and provides a valuable introduction to the most widely used Spanish slang. With this book, both students in school and adult learners who never want to see another classroom can rapidly improve their speaking ability. Breaking Out of Beginner’s Spanish will be an essential aid in passing the supreme language test—communicating fluently with native speakers.

Adult Comics written by Roger Sabin and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-10-11 with Literary Criticism categories.

In a society where a comic equates with knockabout amusement for children, the sudden pre-eminence of adult comics, on everything from political satire to erotic fantasy, has predictably attracted an enormous amount of attention. Adult comics are part of the cultural landscape in a way that would have been unimaginable a decade ago. In this first survey of its kind, Roger Sabin traces the history of comics for older readers from the end of the nineteenth century to the present. He takes in the pioneering titles pre-First World War, the underground 'comix' of the 1960s and 1970s, 'fandom' in the 1970s and 1980s, and the boom of the 1980s and 1990s (including 'graphic novels' and Viz.). Covering comics from the United States, Europe and Japan, Adult Comics addresses such issues as the graphic novel in context, cultural overspill and the role of women. By taking a broad sweep, Sabin demonstrates that the widely-held notion that comics 'grew up' in the late 1980s is a mistaken one, largely invented by the media. Adult Comics: An Introduction is intended primarily for student use, but is written with the comic enthusiast very much in mind.

The Mwindo Epic From The Banyanga written by Daniel Biebuyck and has been published by Univ of California Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-07-28 with Social Science categories.

The feats of the hero Mwindo are here glorified in the bilingual text of an epic which was sung and narrated in a Bantu language and acted out by a member of the Nyanga tribe in the remote forest regions of eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo. Admirably structured, coherent, and richly poetic, the epic is in prose form, interspersed with song and proverbs in verse. An example of the classic tradition of oral folk literature, the tale has important implications for the comparative study of African culture, as the text provides profound insights into the social structure, value system, linguistics, and cosmology of this African people.

An expanded, updated edition of the classic study of Cuban-American culture, this engaging book, which mixes the author’s own story with his reflections as a trained observer, explores how both famous and ordinary members of the “1.5 Generation” (Cubans who came to the United States as children or teens) have lived “life on the hyphen”—neither fully Cuban nor fully American, but a fertile hybrid of both. Offering an in-depth look at Cuban-Americans who have become icons of popular and literary culture—including Desi Arnaz, Oscar Hijuelos, musician Pérez Prado, and crossover pop star Gloria Estefan, as well as poets José Kozer and Orlando González Esteva, performers Willy Chirino and Carlos Oliva, painter Humberto Calzada, and others—Gustavo Pérez Firmat chronicles what it means to be Cuban in America. The first edition of Life on the Hyphen won the Eugene M. Kayden National University Press Book Award and received honorable mentions for the Modern Language Association’s Katherine Singer Kovacs Prize and the Latin American Studies Association’s Bryce Wood Book Award.

European Comics In English Translation written by Randall William Scott and has been published by McFarland this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2002 with Comics & Graphic Novels categories.

European comic authors produced a steady stream of comic material throughout the twentieth century, but gained the world's notice in 1975 when the French magazine Metal Hurlant was founded. A new generation of artists and writers had begun. Soon publishers were producing translations of the new comics into other languages, including English, and comics creators everywhere were inspired to innovation. This is a reference work, arranged by artist or writer, to European comics from the last quarter of the twentieth century that have been translated from any European language into English. It contains a variety of material, from the innocent imperialism of Herge's Tintin to the sadistic murder for hire in Bernet's Torpedo. Albums by a single creator or artist-and-writer team of European origin are the focus; comics in periodicals and anthologies with multiple contributors are excluded. Each entry provides a plot abstract and various notes about the original comic. An author index provides brief biographical information. There is a comprehensive general index.
